Hedwig and the Angry Inch

I can’t believe I saw Hedwig on Broadway 3 times and never once posted about it. So now I’m going to rectify that.

I discovered Hedwig and the Angry Inch in college, because I saw a photo of John Cameron Mitchell in Hedwig makeup in a magazine and thought he looked awesome. Soon enough I was seeing the movie with Carolyn and Adrienne and I looooved it. I pretty much made everyone I knew at the time watch it, and everyone loved it, including LeighAnne who learned about Hedwig when she was coming up to visit me and planning on moving to Buffalo. It didn’t go over so well when we played it for James and Brian though, who called it “the worst movie they’d ever seen”. Careful guys, your homophobia is showing. I attempted to kick them out of my house, but they didn’t believe me and thought I was joking, but they should know, even though it’s been over 10 years, I will never forgive them for that. (For what it’s worth, Brian did apologize, saying that he wouldn’t have wanted me to say that if he had shown me one of his favorite movies.)

Rumors have flown around for years about Hedwig going to Broadway, and in 2014 it finally did. OMG I was so excited at the announcement that it was being revived, that it didn’t matter how much it was going to cost me, I was going to go. They announced it would be a limited run starring Neil Patrick Harris. I didn’t know what to think about that, because I didn’t know he was a singer, but I didn’t care. I was going.

So what turned out to be the first trip to NYC came in May 2014 with Jason, Susan, Jessica and Nick. LeighAnne was supposed to come as well but had to cancel so Jess found a friend who was interested in the ticket. We flew down for just one night for the show, but it turned into 2 nights when our flight home was cancelled due to weather. Ah well.

The show did so well with NPH they extended the run and started having new actors play Hedwig. I didn’t think I’d go again though, we’re just too far away. Then one day I woke up to the news that Michael C Hall was going to play Hedwig. What? Dexter as Hedwig? I had to go. So Jason and I bought tickets to treat ourselves for Christmas and drove to NYC (so flights couldn’t get canceled in the winter and make us miss the show) in December 2014.

But right after I had bought the tickets to see Michael C Hall it was announced that he’d be followed by the one, the only, the original, John Cameron Mitchell. *dies* I literally started laughing in bed when I read it, I just could not believe it. We had just bought the MCH tickets though, so I let it go…until we went to the MCH show. I decided I couldn’t NOT see John Cameron Mitchell as Hedwig on BROADWAY, so when we got home, I bought us another set of tickets, and we went for the final time in March 2015.

So the first show with NPH, I was just so excited because I really never thought I’d see a major production of Hedwig. I was sitting next to a guy from the south somewhere, who was as excited as I was, and we both said we’d probably cry through the whole thing. I thought it was so great that he and his girlfriend had traveled all the way to NYC because he loved Hedwig so much, given that the South isn’t known for it’s open mindedness. He had a bunch of souvenirs when I sat down, and he was so excited “They had a Shroud of Hedwig, wanna see?!?” I did cry when it started because, again, I just never thought I’d see it live. And during Origin of Love. And during Midnight Radio, because I can’t help it. NPH did a fantastic job as Hedwig, and he sang better than I expected. His performance was funny, bringing out more of the comedic aspects of the show, and he seemed to play Hedwig as a pretty happy character despite the bitterness and sadness of the story.

The 2nd show with MCH, it took me a while to get into it, because despite the make up and wig, I still could see MCH, and at the time I only knew MCH as Dexter. But after a few songs I forgot all that, and it was just Hedwig. MCH was definitely still a man in a dress, he was the manliest Hedwig, but he was fantastic as well. I didn’t know he had a musical theater background either, so I was impressed. I cried at Midnight Radio, again…MCH was still funny when Hedwig was funny, but he played Hedwig differently than NPH, more emotional and sad about life. NPH had more energy, or flamboyance than MCH, but maybe MCH is a more realistic portrayal of Hedwig, since Hedwig is really a forced transgender woman, based on his living situation, and not truly transgender in a sense that he felt like a woman trapped in a man’s body. I feel like Hedwig would still have some manly characteristics despite being forced to live as a woman now. Jason thought MCH was better than NPH.

But then there was JCM! I seriously cannot believe I got to see the original Hedwig. O.M.G. I feel so thankful, and like my life is complete. God, just, so awesome. So a few weeks before our show JCM hurt his knee during a show, and was replaced for a week by MCH again so he could heal, and I happened to convince my friend Emily to see it when she was in NY. I was sad she didn’t get to see JCM, but she loved MCH. Then I convinced another friend, Anthony, to see it, and he did – the day before we were going to JCM. He texted a few things about the show that I didn’t really follow because at the time I had no idea JCM was performing injured, in a knee brace.  So the show we saw was a bit different than what JCM was doing before the injury, but it was still phenomenal, and funny, and fantastic. JCM is my favorite, I’m not sure anyone could top him in my opinion. The injury was written into the script, with the story that Hedwig had gotten Nancy Kerrigan-ed by a man in a Michael C Hall mask, or at least, she thought it was a mask LOL! Much of the show was performed while sitting in a stool, and Yitzak had to bring Hedwig a box to rest his leg on, which when he forgot, earned him the wrath of Hedwig. JCM’s Hedwig was bitter and angry but still funny and likable. The jokes have been updated with different names (like John Mayer instead of Phil Collins, etc) and there are some new bits special for the Broadway production, but the show is very on script compared to the movie, same lines with the same inflection. However, JCM ad-libbed a lot more than the other 2, with his show actually going 2o minutes longer. Apparently James Franco was in the audience with us, which JCM mentioned in the show in one of his ad-libbed speeches. I cried at the beginning, again, because…JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL AS HEDWIG!! And I cried during Midnight Radio, again. God, it was just so fantastic.

There were 2 more Hedwigs before the show closed on Broadway, but they are taking it on the road, so here’s hoping I’ll get to see it a few more times with some more interesting actors. Surely it’ll go to Toronto, if not Buffalo, and I keep joking that I’ll be going to see it in London’s west end once Daniel Radcliff and David Tennant are named as Hedwigs (not joking, better start racking up some credit card airline points).

OH MY GOD I GOT TO SEE HEDWIG AND THE ANGRY INCH ON BROADWAY THREE TIMES INCLUDING ONCE WITH JOHN CAMERON MITCHELL!!!! HOLY CRAAAAAP.

Delirious version 4?

I made my first personal website in 1996, I think. Using AOL Press and geocities (remember that?!?). I tried to update it with my profound 16 year old thoughts (as still can be seen here), but it didn’t really happen. Enter blogging, and using blogger to create Delirious in 2001. It changed everything. I started thinking in blogs, what I was going to blog about later, what I was going to say about X thing that I was doing. I redesigned the site every few months. It was full of crap, but I loved it. Eventually I moved from blogger to movable type, and finally to live journal. I think my record was something like 23 posts in one day (all about NIN’s “and all that could have been” dvd haha).

Somewhere along the line, the blogging fell off. I think there are 2 reasons.

  1. I’m old. I’m 35 now. I’ve been blogging for 14 years. The things I would blog about in college just aren’t part of my life anymore. At some point you lose the angst, and the vague emo posts, and then I thought there was nothing really to say. Day to day life is boring. So the blog became posts about big events like concerts and vacations, and a dream diary. And then even that fell away, not even bothering to blog about small vacations or lesser known bands.
  2. Facebook. One line posts about something that happened, something funny, some observation became Status Updates instead of blog posts. Pictures I might have once posted, or “re-blogged” just became Facebook posts. My blog had few readers back in college, and I certainly have none now, but Facebook shares my *very important* thoughts with my 400 friends who are captive audiences! What was the point of blogging now?

But I still do quite a lot. My interests have changed, but I’ve done more in the 3 years I’ve been with J than I have ever (he makes me be social, damn him!) I garden, I (try to) cook, I read a lot. And I quite like going back and being able to see what I’ve done.

So I’m going to try to start this up again. This is for me, and if someone else happens to read it, that’s ok.

I’ve converted to WordPress and imported all my livejournal and blogger posts are being imported slowly. I’m missing about 4 months in the middle of 2005 (which I’m really mad about, because it included some very important concert reviews) because I switched hosting companies when they jacked up the price on me, and apparently I had no back ups (they’ve gotta be somewhere!) I’ve gone through and categorized everything, and tagged it all, and had to give things titles, which I *hate*. I used to blog an awful lot, and an awful lot of crap, so I combined multiple entries under one date, and edited a lot of junk out. And it’s all for me, because I know no one else cares haha. I’m not very good with WordPress, as I only ever faked my way through html and coding to begin with, so I’m not entirely happy with the look but maybe one day I’ll find a theme I like or be able to edit them myself (not likely!) But here it is. For better or worse.

head

i really wish i was a normal healthy human. so treatment for my head continues. the nerve block failed, which turns out to be a good thing because my high deductible insurance plan means that it cost $300, a bill which i did not receive until after i would have received the 2nd shot, and thus a 2nd $300 bill. so thank god for small favors. dr put me on topamax, another anti epilepsy drug to try. i’m now on the full dose of 4 pills, with little response. the goal is less than 9 headache days a month. i am still at less than 9 headache free days a month. topamax came with a list of side effects including nice ones like less sweating and weight loss, and not nice ones like depression, tingling of the hands feet and face, exhaustion. so of course i get the not nice ones, and none of the nice ones. so when it does seem to work, and i have a headache free day, i still don’t feel good. i’m tired as hell, i am depressed, don’t want to do anything and don’t want to leave the house. if not for having to go to dice class and work, i wouldn’t leave the house, for real. so awesome. i go for a follow up in a few weeks. given that my insurance won’t cover pretty much anything, botox treatment is going to be unaffordable and thus out of the question. that leaves my only treatment options as further playing with medication. the dr mentioned adding in small doses of elavil again, which i was sort of against because stopping the elavil last time was hell, but she says the combination of elavil and topamax can really help. plus elavil being an antidepressant, maybe it would counteract being depressed from the topamax. who knows, but…i don’t know what is worse…at least when i have a headache and am not depressed i can force myself out of the house to do things. feeling headache free but without the motivation to do anything kinda sucks.

hell

yesterday i spent an hour or so cleaning the house. sprayed and wiped the bathroom sink. sprayed and washed the kitchen counters and stove. vacuumed the tile floors, bathroom, bedroom and living room carpet (with one of those powdered perfume baking soda sprinkle products). Then washed the tile and bathroom floors, and bedroom hardwood with the sponge mop and lysol. then i spent an hour out in the garden pulling garlic, sweating to death. came back in, took a shower, and afterwards started getting a migraine.

visual aura started on the left visual field, a sort of big line right in the middle of my vision. i made some tea, took some excedrin, quickly tried to eat some mashed potatoes. they didn’t seem to help. the aura seemed to go away for a bit as i tried to watch some tv, but then it came back on the right side of my visual field. that’s never happened before. my head started to hurt and i knew i wouldn’t be able to go to work so i called in. tried to fight it, staying on the couch and watching tv but it got to be too much so i went to bed.

the pain kept getting worse. i kept having to go to the bathroom every 10 or 15 minutes, which is too often considering i only had a cup of tea. on one trip to the bathroom i realized my left hand and up my arm was completely numb. went back to bed where it stayed numb for a while before switching sides to the right hand/arm. my lips got tingly as well as my tongue, though not much, and then my teeth/gums. that’s new. they sort of felt like they were going to fall out. more getting up to go to the bathroom, more numbness that kept switching sides.

i figured i should see if i could still talk, so i sat on the bed and tried to say things. i couldn’t really think of anything to say. i tried to say “i can still talk” but it didn’t come out right (or maybe it did and i couldn’t hear it right). i believe i was using wrong verb tenses, like “i can still talked”. i kept trying to say it, and think of other simple sentences to say and they all had weird verb issues, or i’d put extra sounds at the end of words. i couldn’t say my boyfriend’s name, though i could spell it (i think!). i definitely was not speaking babble or jibberish like when this happened this badly in senior year of high school, but i definitely was not speaking right.

back to bed, i think i fell asleep for an hour or so. by 5 hours in the aura problems seemed to have gone away. my head really really hurt, there were some eye issues where they didn’t feel right yet, but the other things had straightened themselves out. i wasn’t very tired and couldn’t sleep so i actually did things on my phone and read. J brought me spaghettios and stayed for a few hours, went to proper sleep around 4am until 1pm. afraid to get out of bed, the pain is still hanging around, esp when i move or sneeze.

Canadian Chip Review

LeighAnne came over for “craft day”, which was really just her painting Tillie on shirts for us for Bruce Springsteen, while I watched ha. But I provided the work space and the chips.

I bought the Utz “Crab Chips” from the Christmas Tree Shop, knowing that they weren’t going to taste like crab, but like crab seasoning. I wanted to try them all week but I refrained. Lei had them before at home. I didn’t think they tasted like anything.

The other chips I bought at a grocery store in Canada next to Ikea when I went with friends last week. The Sweet Chili Thai I opened right away, as I’m on a mission to find a brand that compares to the wonderful ones from Marks and Spencer in England. They are pretty good, but not quite M&S. They are ruffle chips, which I don’t care for, I feel like they are always sorta stale.

There were sooo many President’s Choice chips I could have bought but I restricted myself to just 4 this time. The other 3 were:

Tandoori Barbeque. The back of the bag says it has the wonderful flavors of Indian Spices. No, no it doesn’t. They are tasty but they are in no way Indian spiced. They taste like sour cream and onion with a slight hint of BBQ. They were more like the All Dressed chips we had last year. Sorta disappointing, cuz real Indian spices would probably be tasty.

General Tao Chicken. I’ve never had real General Tao before, so I can’t compare the tastes, but again, it was good. A hint of spice. Lei said it tasted just like the General.

Spicy Piri Piri. I think I ate at a Piri Piri place with Pierre in London. It might be Pakistani? (*edit* it’s Portugese) It’s tasty spicy sauce on chicken. These tasted yummy as well, the spiciest of the bunch but not unbarable (to me, who loves spice).

Overall, these were not supposed to really be “gross” flavors like the Japanese ones, but just unusual. They were all tasty, and will continue to be eaten, unlike the Japanese ones 🙂

Japanese (and Chicago) potato chip taste test

Well the Clam Chowder Doritos from Japan that LeighAnne had gotten for me for xmas finally passed through customs and arrived, plus I had found Hot Dog potato chips at 7-11 in Chicago, so we had 2 last kinds to try tonight.

Clam Chowder Doritos…”gourmet” as you can see on the bag ha. Jeremy picked this one first, and the bag was extremely difficult to open. We could only assume because they were not fit for human consumption, and opening it would cause the end of the world. Jeremy pictured those maps you see with giant targets on them, I pictured armageddon exploding from the bag once I got it open. The smell was exactly like that hahaha. Wretched. Worst of the bunch by far. I almost couldn’t eat it because of the smell. Having never tried clam chowder, I can’t compare the tastes, but Lei said it was exactly what she expected from clam chowder doritos. Everyone found them to be awful, on my first chip I didn’t think it was so bad after you get past the smell. Vaguely fishy, mostly salty, with some sort of underlying dorito taste. They all vehemently disagreed. With my 2nd chip, I disagreed with myself too. So not good.

Hot Dog potato chips – I found these at 7-11 in Chicago when I was there for the Sabres/Blackhawks game. I thought these had the potential to be pretty awful too. Even though I like hot dogs, I don’t find it to be a flavor that would translate to any other food. In the end, they weren’t bad. They lacked a hot dog flavor, and went more with the condiments you put on them – ketchup, mustard and relish. Lei said she could eat those, and James agreed until he had more than 5 of them, then that was enough.

Japanese Potato Chip Taste Test

so….somewhere along the way LeighAnne and I got interested in trying strange flavors of potato chips…usually from Canada, cuz where else are we going to get strange flavors around here. For christmas Lei decided to buy me a bunch of bags of weird flavors from Japan. Score! So we decided to taste test tonight at the resurrection of Movie Night.

Jasen had the pleasure of being the one to open each bag and experience the initial aroma. So let’s begin

Seaweed and Salt
Jasen and Lei were almost gagging on the smell before passing it along to me for a whiff, and I think they exaggerated. I was the first one to eat a chip, and really it was the least offensive of the bunch. It didn’t really taste like much, a bit earthy maybe. James and Brian bought thought it tasted a bit fishy, or like seaweed, but really, it doesn’t have much flavor at all.

Soy Sauce and Mayo
This was the one I thought would be the worst. I mean, really, soy sauce and mayo. barf. It turns out this was the best of the bunch. It had a strange burny/ashy/campfire taste. There was nothing reminiscent of soy sauce (aka not very salty) or mayo (aka not gross). I wouldn’t say they were delicious, but definitely edible.

Salmon sushi and wasabi
This one came in a ziploc type bag, and inside was another bag. Let’s just say I could smell it as soon as Jasen opened it, and it was not pleasant. However the smell was worse than the taste. There was no wasabi taste to it at all, and I wouldn’t even say it was very fishy, just…different. And wow holy crap, I just opened the bag again to have another chip, the smell is so bad.

Shrimp and wasabi twistys
As Melanie said, it smells like a dirty fish tank. Indeed it does. She said it tasted like it too LOL. I don’t make a habit of lick cleaning fish bowls so I can’t say I agree. They really are not good, but for some reason James and I agreed that we’d probably eat them. They are one of those things that you’d probably sit there eating, while playing a video game or something and not realizing you ate the whole bag. Still not a very strong wasabi taste but…

Shrimp twistys
Jasen did throw up a little in his mouth upon opening these bad boys. They smelled even worse than the shirmp and wasabi ones, most definitely like a dirty fish tank and a bag of fish food, or brine shrimp, or ….ug. And the taste…you really want the wasabi ones. Even though you can’t taste any wasabi, it somehow brings SOMETHING to the table to make them at least slightly edible. These were just awful. Kitty didn’t even like them!!! I tried one in nacho cheese, it didn’t help. Ug. Awful.

I would say the shrimp ones were the worst, but one bag Lei bought has not made it through customs yet, and it has the potential to trump all of the above…Clam Chowder Doritos *gag*

I can’t wait til some day when Lei and I get to go to Japan and try more of their weird food, like octopus ink ice cream, and other fun things.

i hate when people tell me to smile

yes indeed, i hate when people tell me to smile. especially at work. i don’t understand smiling for no reason, and when i’m shuffling cards, there doesn’t seem to be much of a reason to smile about it. i see people who smile all the time and i don’t think “wow they must be a really happy person”, i think they must be crazy. i saw this as part of an article on travel, and a person’s issues with the USA, and it is perfect:

Smiles mean NOTHING
When I meet Americans abroad, one of their biggest complaints are along the lines of “nobody smiles on Prague’s trams!” “That waitress was so rude to me! She didn’t even smile!”

Goddamnit America – I have the opposite complaint for you. You guys smile way too much. It’s fucking annoying! How can you tell when someone means it? And why the hell would a stranger doing a crossword puzzle on public transport want to look giddy? (Me: EXACTLY!)

When people smile in Europe it means something. For example, because Germans don’t go around looking like an American toothpaste commercial when I was with them and they smiled, it lit up the room – you know it’s genuine and you can’t help but smile back, because you are genuinely happy. You’ve shared a joke, or a funny story or you are in love etc.

But all the time? When you smile all the time in public it means nothing. Apparently a smile releases endorphins, but if your face is stuck that way I’m sure your dreams of a natural high will fade soon. I’d rather focus on trying to make my life better and have reasons to smile than lie to myself and the world.

Despite how surely I sound in this post, because complaining is the theme of the article, the fact that I vent when I mean it, means that when you see me happy you know I’m truly happy. And that is indeed a lot of the time But not all of it!

the rest of his complaints are here: www.fluentin3months.com/no-usa-for-me/

*edit* the “wasteful consumerism” about apple fanboys/girls is pretty great too.
*edit 2* i pretty much agree with the whole article, reinforcing my belief that i don’t belong here.

Trudy

My Aunt Trudy passed away on Wednesday 🙁 I don’t know who Jacky, who wrote this, is but…

Screaming sirens of police and ambulance reverberating around Kini in mid-morning, first alerted us all that something was wrong. In a few minutes that combination of telephone, email and Syros grapevine spread the sad news. Trudy had been found dead in her bath. Her friends and acquaintances are shocked, they cannot believe it. How could someone who ran towards and embraced life at such full tilt, die in this way. But as the days pass, funeral arrangements are made and family summoned from America, we begin to realize that it’s true.

Trudy will leave a hole in many lives. She was an energetic dynamo rushing from one project to the next, exhausting her helpers and friends and bulldozing her way through problems. She added colour to our lives with her myriad ideas and restless energy. Her causes were many and varied. She started and was still working on a local breast cancer awareness campaign, she ‘cleaned up’ Kini on many occasions, working with children in local schools to raise environmental awareness. In this year’s carnival, she had made, a ‘Mother earth’ costume and paraded through the streets of Ano Syros spreading her message, later taking it into Syros schools. Her passion for animals that led to an early cat neutering programme caused a lot of ill-feeling among the villagers, but she carried on, getting traps and cages imported from Germany and inviting charity vets to stay. We were all press-ganged into action to help catch and nurse the recovering animals. She would not take no for an answer. Woe betide anyone who left a dog on a short lead or without water and she’d almost physically attack hunters when she came across them on her walks. Meanwhile she and Kuriakos dog-napped a beautiful collie that was being mistreated in Crete; Lassie had a long and happy life with them. Cats arrived regularly; they knew where the food and medical treatment was good.

Born in Germany and emigrating to the States with her parents when she was a child, she developed a facility for languages, so she could communicate with everybody; most recently teaching herself Spanish, to volunteer at hostels on the pilgrimage trail to Santiago, where she walked a different portion each year and made friends from all around the world.

Although she had lived in many different places, Trudy’s base was Kini, where she had just built a roof garden, experimenting with hydroponics and a vegetable garden nearby, to grow organic fruit and vegetables. She travelled at every opportunity, visiting friends, volunteering at the Tiger Temple in Thailand, running a Christmas party in Goa for the children of migrants, raising money to bring water to a Zimbabwean village and while working in Saudi, collecting and transporting clothes and blankets for Kurdish refugees, for which she won a United Nations award.

She searched for ideas too, visiting John of God in Brazil, Amma’s ashram in Kerala, Brahma Kumari retreats – some of them silent – how did she do that? She was always first in line with any visiting guru or group; hungry for new teachings. But she also joined practical things; Greek language and dancing, film evenings and more mundane events such as bazaars and dog shows. She was forever clearing out holding garage sales for her charities, but however much she sold, it didn’t seem to make much impact on the amount of things overflowing from cupboards and drawers.

Accidents were a feature of her life, as the scrapes on her car demonstrate, but a serious fall from her roof, several years ago, failed to slow her energy, even though she had to stay flat on her back for three months. Driving with her was scary, in her car or motorhome; there were just too many distractions along the way!

Her style of eating was to graze; nuts, fruits, vegetables, popcorn. She didn’t eat meat or drink alcohol, but was in to every faddy diet imaginable to detox and keep fit. However, her walking speed and daily treks to Delphini ensured she didn’t put on weight. She’d often stop by on her way home, reluctant to be an uninvited guest for dinner. When she acquiesced, which she nearly always did, she’d feast with gusto, happily coming back for second and third helpings.

Trudy had a big heart. She’d always help out and get more and more frenzied as she got busier and busier with tasks she had promised to do. She knew everyone and was always late because she met and talked to so many people along the way. Only pint-sized, she was fearless, there was nothing and no-one she wouldn’t tackle as the many scars she bore from ungrateful animals testified.

She hosted many parties; loving to put on a German-style Christmas Eve celebration. She filled the place with hundreds of candles and caused fires on more than one occasion. Easter was good with her too; up to Anastasi armed with candles, sparklers and ear-plugs for the midnight celebration, then roasting lamb the next day, overlooking the sea in Dani – although she never ate any.

She lived almost on the beach, but hated sand, fussed about getting her hair wet, wore bright colours, lots of jewellery and strappy sandals when she wasn’t hiking, causing her to trip over regularly. She was noisy at a party or in a group and spoke rapidly to get her ideas across. But the ramifications of her death are being felt everywhere. Who will tell us which films are on, who will organize the group for the next International Women’s Day, who will care for the stray animals of Kini, the ducks on the beach? And across the world, what about those children she was supporting, the prisoners she was writing to and the Zimbabwean school needing books and a fresh water supply?

We can’t begin to fill the gap she has left, but maybe together, we can help some of her ideas live on and move forward, carrying on her positive attitude and approach, anywhere she saw a need. So ‘Bon voyage’ Trudy, wherever you are – we’ll miss you and our worlds will be less colourful without you.

‘Never send to know for whom the bell tolls – it tolls for thee.’

10 years later…

10 years already. At the time it really felt like the world was ending, but here we are.

I still find it hard to wrap my mind around. I don’t think about it much, I try not to, but there are times when I can’t help it…getting on an airplane, seeing the NY skyline…10 years later it still looks wrong.

At the time I thought my reaction was unreasonable. I had no connection to the attacks, didn’t lose anyone, didn’t know anyone who lost anyone but I was beyond upset. And 10 years later, I still find my reaction unreasonable. I can still easily get upset watching footage of the attacks, listening to people who were directly effected by it, even talking about that month or 2 of upheaval is hard. I get teary and choked up. I can’t explain why, but it was the biggest event of my life, and it was a horrific tragedy that I’ll never forget it.

I wish I was more eloquent, or profound. But all I can do is remember. 10 years ago was a beautiful day, the beginning of my Senior year in college. I left my criminal justice class to go to the health center, where CNN was on tv. A plane had hit the WTC, but from footage it looked like a small plane and no big deal, it would get repaired. When I got out of the health center, the 2nd plane had hit. By the time I got back to my townhouse the buildings were gone….
