Jonathan Davis at Turning Stone

sooo worth it. omg. the show was fantastic!

godhead opened, and while i had seen them open for orgy…god 4 years ago?..and they were good, i was unsure about this time given how much i disliked the shadow line. turns out they were playing acoustic too, so it wasn’t too bad. they played for a half hour, told the audience that their name was godhead at least 4 times, covered pink floyd “wish you were here” (how many times have i heard that covered this year?), and closed with “sinking” the only song i knew. the other songs were from their unplugged cd (which I’m unsure if it’s the same as the shadow line – might explain why shadow line sucked, if i didn’t know it was supposed to be unplugged and boring, and expecting electronics and kickass).

then we had the pleasure of the worst opening band ever. not a band, a person. and i’ve seen many shitty opening bands so this is saying alot. this person – shackar, or shankar, or something like that – was worse than the girl who opened for nin in reno in 05 (carre calaway was it?). thankfully he “played” only 15 minutes. and it turns out he is on jon davis’s backing band. but yeah, horrible.

the stage set up was what you expect from an “unplugged” type show…red velvet curtain in back, big candle sticks, and a throne type chair for jon. he came out to the creepy ethereal music from Queen of the Damned and went into “system”. oh kick ass. the queen of the damned songs were the whole reason i wanted to go to the show. he did all 5 of them, plus one called “careless” which didn’t make it onto the soundtrack because it was about “the ancients” and their plot line was really non existent in the movie. the songs sounded great, and i’m so so glad i went, just for those. throw in a handfull of korn songs, and covers, and it was an awesome show. he seemed really…calm…and that he was really enjoying doing something different. when korn finally implodes, he’ll do just fine solo.

following eric’s example, i snatched the setlist from the soundboard:
system
last legal drug
4u
hey daddy
forsaken
dirty
alone i break
slept so long
love on the rocks (yes neil diamond)
hushabye
kick the PA
not meant for me
hold on
blue monday
careless
redeemer
got the life
trash
falling away from me
the chauffeur

so very glad i went. given the chance i’d definitely go again. i’m curious as to if he’s changing the set list up for the other shows. we shall see i guess.

i lost 100$ playing blackjack 🙁

an aside, any aaron lewis/staind fans…aaron is playing solo at my casino in january, in the bears den, which seats only 400. so it might be something to look into.

and jesus christ, what the hell sabres?!?!

family values

today was the family values show with kate at darien lake. we got there around 5 just as dir en grey was going on. from the photos i saw on some website about them, i was surprised that they looked like “normal” rockers, rather than glammed up multi colored hair rockers. they weren’t bad. it was just weird seeing japanese boys playing metal. haha. but i love little japanese boys. so cute. flyleaf followed. they’ve got a little chick singer. appearance wise she reminded me of avril lavigne, she sounded sorta like bjork with a metal scream. they weren’t bad, but she was too quiet and everything sorta sounded the same. the guitarist looked like a caveman. kate thought she was watching a geico commercial and i thought it was an snl unfrozen caveman lawyer sketch hahahah. stone sour was up next. i only had ever heard bother, and possibly another song, and they were pretty good. corey was sick but i couldn’t tell. deftones followed. they played “passenger” !!! !! i was like, is it, could it be?? YES! that made me happy. and they rocked of course. will definitely have to look into the new album. apparently their new single is called “buffalo” and it’s about chino and maynard james keenan being stuck in Buffalo haha.

then korn. they were good but it was sorta weird without head. they had another person drumming besides david, the guitarist with a mask on who replaced head, and then other people with animal masks on….to make head’s replacement not seem so odd maybe? not entirely sure. i don’t know any of the songs from the last 2 albums because well…i didn’t like them. they didn’t do that many of them tho so that was good. there were long breaks between songs while jon davis sucked oxygen from a mask. a few times it seemed like someone got off beat, and the songs would sound weird for a bit. it was good but…not as good as the other times i saw korn. they did “hollow life” acoustic from a small center stage, which was neat. david playing bongos, so hot. chino came on stage to do “wicked” which was awesome – except both his and jon’s mics stopped working at the end hahaha. and between some songs jon davis turned a fire hose on the crowd. i could have SO done with out that…#1 it was friggen cold out #2 i didn’t need red dye streaming down my face. and just, no reason or desire to be wet. oh and i got a guitar pick before the show even started, and i had to fight more for that fucking pick than i did for a tambourine. the pick landed next to me so i put my foot over it, and like 3 people piled on me to try to get my foot off of it. wtf retards.

the show ended up being a reunion of people from high school i never ever thought i’d see again. first, this guy grabs me, and it’s tex/jeremy who graduated early senior year to join the marines. wow. he saw me, not the other way around, so i was totally surprised that he would even remember me and want to talk to me. so it was neat to see him. he hasn’t changed. but he’s married! hahah. then after one of the sets i was looking at the seats behind us and joe, the original goth boy in highschool who shaved his eyebrows off and wore eyeliner to school, who i was in love with, was there. i think the last time i saw him was at a deftones show hahah. didn’t expect him to come talk to me either but he did, then came into the pit and hung out with us for all of deftones. i have his number to hang out and go to shows now. gah i so used to love that kid hahahahha.

i’m 99% sure that mark, trent’s security head during the feb/march tour is now with korn. it looked like him from where i could see him on stage, but since he wasn’t walking around like he did during nin i didn’t get to talk to him and find out for sure. i’ll have to tell amira anyway.

Ozzfest 2003

oh how i love guitars and double bass drums….ozzfest today. headed out early afternoon, arrived around 1:30. walked around the 2nd stage passed different booths they had set up. we ended up seeing the end of despwa’s set, chimera, motograter, and vovoid. we wandered around the whole time, didn’t exactly watch the 2nd stage, but we heard them. we ended up wandering to the merch tent which was set up next to the FYE autograph tent. and just in time for disturbed to be making an appearance. now the deal with the autograph tent was, you needed a wrist band to get an autograph. and to get the wrist band you had to buy that band’s cd. even if you already had it. for the extraordinary FYE prices of 18$. good money making idea, bad idea for fans. we ended up standing against a barrier next to the tent and watching the whole thing. all of disturbed came to sign stuff. then after them was korn (2 members) and zakk wylde. danielle debated buying another untouchables cd to meet korn, but figured it wouldn’t be jon davis…well it was jon…and fieldy. so we watched them for a while, then zakk came out on the other side of the tent – closer to where we were. he had a dick of a manager/entourage guy who made all of us leave. why? we were on the other side of the barrier just hanging out, not doing anything wrong. so security made everyone standing there get out. that was lovely. the whole time it was off and on sprinkling, but nothing too bad. we wandered over to the lawn section cuz there were more booths around, and by then they were letting people into seats. got our seats, sat around, it started raining really hard. well i wanted to catch some of cradle of filth’s set, so we went back out in the rain, which wasn’t that bad, to watch a min or two of their set on the 2nd stage. they had a cirque du solei type acrobat girl as part of their show. back to our seats – just in time. it fucking downpoured. the rain running off the tent was crazy. lots of soaked people. and lots of mud.

so the main stage show started with chevelle. they were ok i guess. in the middle of one of their last songs (well, it turned out to be their last), everyone turned around to watch the people who started throwing mud on the lawn. cuz people are smart. so the singer goes, turn around, the show is this way, not that way. and i guess he got pissed enough at everyone turning around to watch the mud, that they just stopped playing. he said to turn around again, then said, “fine, you’re not getting the rest of that song” and they all walked off. LOL. it was great. then some guy threatened the mud throwers with arrest. disturbed was next. i will admit that they were better this time than the first time at UB before STP. but i still do not like them. and i still do not like david’s little wrestler act on stage. and as adr said, i do not like the preacher act, calling everyone his sisters and brothers. but david did do a nice little shout out to their “fallen brother” marilyn manson, who couldn’t join us today, and how no one should be able to tell us who we can watch, and what we can listen to etc. it was funny, all sorts of people had “where the fuck is marilyn manson” shirts on. which brings me to a question. how the hell can six flags disagree with marilyn manson, and ban him from appearing on stage, but let cradle of filth play, when they have more antichristian rhetoric than manson could ever create. such hypocracy. just because they know of manson and his whole stupid image, they think he’s evil, but they got super anti christian people playing on second stage, cuz they have no clue who they are. pisses me off.

korn was after disturbed. korn fucking rocked. they played about an hour, which was expected. opened with blind, then twist, and adidas. or got the life. i dont know they order, but they also played freak on a leash, falling away from me, did my time, faget, here to stay, somebody someone, shoots and ladders, i think more than that, but i forget. jon played the bag pipes so danielle was happy, but no kilt. they just really rocked. i had so much fun.

ozzy…was ozzy. lol just like you see on tv. jumping around, throwing buckets of water, spraying hoses…shaking, looking disoriented etc. one part was really kinda sad, cuz it looked as if he had no clue where he was, or forgot the words or something. but he was good most of the time, as far as that goes. cant say what he played, i just know he played iron man, mr crowley, bark at the moon, crazy train, mama i’m coming home…and others i recognized but don’t know the names of. good show.

i love metal shows. they’re so much fun. partly because they are so cliched hahah.

now i don’t quite understand what the problem is, when leaving darien lake after a concert. how have they not figured out the correct way to do it, so you’re not sitting at a standstill in your car forever?? why have they still not paved all the concert parking area. cuz tonight, that turned into a huge problem. lots of rain = lots of mud. lots of mud = lots of cars stuck in the mud. including mine. we got to one part of the lot and we noticed the car in front of us was stuck. wheels spinning, going nowhere. we’re like fuck, we better not get stuck. but of course every car got stuck when you don’t have the momentum to keep moving cuz you gotta sit there sinking in the mud forever before the line of cars moves again. i thought i was ok, and then nope, car just wasn’t going anywhere. there were some guys standing around pushing people out of the mud. so a guy got us out, which was really nice. cuz he’s covered in mud now of course. my car…gah. it’s drenched in mud lol. we actually didn’t have too bad of a wait to get out. it was about 20 min. and the show was over and we were in the car by 9:30 lol. the wait was so much better than the STP wait which i swear was over an hour.

so home around 11, tired out. had to wash my feet, since smart me wore my sandals. i should have worn the asbestos shoes. oh well. ran into a kid from work who always takes me off my roulette game. he grabbed me and was like, we need you on blackjack. i’m like NO! hahah. i bought some earrings. managed not to spend any other money, no food, or souvenirs, or alcohol or anything. my earrings were 5 bucks.

i’m really tired. might be heading out to the terminal tomorrow afternoon with jerry. i want puddle pictures damnit! i got my case of film today, so i’m all set for another month now

i’m dying again. i guess i only die on mon/wed/fri….sudden bad head pains in middle of poli sci…great. proff made a comment about my shirt (duran duran)… i handed in my quiz (first person done…again…comeon now there are 4 MC questions..how hard is that?) and he laffs and says “i cant believe you have a duran duran shirt”… and then he said something else i completely did not understand. he talks kinda funny sometimes, the way he emphasizes words… so no idea what he said haha oh well.

i swear, if we have a work day in comp art, i’m leaving. i am not sitting there for 2 hrs staring at a comp screen doing nothing. i can do that here :)…no but really. my head hurts too bad to sit there not doing anything if we’re just going to work on our illustrator project. which i finished last class…cuz i need to study for my clinical exam…i didn’t really study last night… i read my notes abunch of times, and read the 3 chapters again. but that’s not really studying. so need to go over some shit. maybe half of comp art will be a lesson and the rest of the time work time, cuz then i’ll leave after the lesson.

i’m dying. chest pains. head pains. i feel like i’m 80.

i’ve decided i really like the new korn cd. parts i don’t like. but most of it i do…it’s really different. hard to explain why. they kept saying that it was harder than self titled, etc…which i disagree. it’s harder than issues i think, but…it’s just DIFFERENT… and the melodies on it are really good…i can’t get past how nice the melodies are in some of the songs. it’s weird.

yep “make it go away” definitely best song on this cd.

went to mcds cuz i had a craving for french fries. and now i want donuts. i was gonna go to dunkin but donuts at this time of night are usually stale. and i need to put gas in my car. i could get home on the amt of gas i have, but now that i have to go to rochester first, then to home, will definitely run out of gas. but it’s so expensive. it’s fucking 1.38 all of a sudden. so here’s hoping it’s cheaper in rochester.

the thing i love about clinical psych is that i can take common sense guesses and still get the questions right. i was taking the exam thinking, god i don’t know any of this. one question i left blank and went back to answer. ended up just picking the answer that seemed like it made the most sense… and voila it was correct…lol. and i also love that i can completely bullshit on the identifies and get full credit. like the last exam i got 30/30 pts on that part, and totally bullshitted at least 2 of them. one of my answers was only 3 sentences long and i got full credit. lol…so i got 3 MC wrong this time, and i’m assuming i’ll get full credit again on the 2nd part…so yay for me. i could see getting a 4 on the last question, cuz i didn’t say much about “g” factor. oh well.

i put in INXS’s “X” in my stereo last night. i haven’t listened to it in a long long time. i forgot how freaking great it is. so then i was thinking….ppl have compared u2 to inxs on alot of things…and so i came up with my INXS vs U2 theory.
– they were both very popular at the same time. they were both vying for “best band in the world” status in the mid/late 80s.
– they both started around the same time, late 70s.
– they both had their “best” album, critically acclaimed as masterpieces, around the same time… U2’s “joshua tree” and INXS’s “Kick”
– they both had their “2nd best” album around the same time… U2’s “achtung baby” and INXS’s “X”…both follow ups to the “best” album.
– i like both the “2nd best” albums far more than what is considered to be both their best albums.
– they both had live albums and videos around the same time….although U2’s “rattle and hum” was before “Achtung” and INXS’s “live baby live” was after “X”…same general time frame.
– both had a drop in popularity around the same time, arguably when trying to follow up their 2 big successes. “zooropa” wasn’t as widely liked as “achtung” just as “welcome to wherever you are” wasn’t as widely liked as “X” (but i could be wrong about “welcome”…because i can’t remember if that followed “X” or if “full moon dirty hearts” did..but either way, ppl hated “full moon”)
– both attempted a “comeback” of sorts around the same time…mid/late 90s with U2’s “pop” and INXS’s “elegantly wasted” with both not creating as much of a stir as intended.
– bono and michael hutchence both danced really bad white boy dances 🙂
– bono and michael both had really bad mullets
– bono and michael both have children with really long bizarre names hahah
– both had band members with alcohol problems that made the members miss important events in the bands’ careers (adam missed a u2 gig in australia…and i believe it was tim, who missed the “never tear us apart” video shoot in prague…but it might have been some other INXS member)
– both sang about political themes in the beginnings of their careers, but dropped off a bit as they got more popular.
– both of the “best” albums had songs regarding guns and sky’s….U2’s “bullet the blue sky” and INXS’s “guns in the sky”

i think that is all…i might have had others that i thought of last night, but i don’t remember anymore. but yeah…the main thing that strikes me is that I think both band’s follow up albums to their big hits are far better than the hit. it is hard to deny the genius of the first 4 songs on “joshua tree”….they truely are brilliant masterpieces. but to me, the rest of the album leaves alot to be desired. every song on “achtung baby” is brilliant. “love is blindness” is the best u2 song ever. and it’s on “achtung”. “Kick” had super songs…”never tear us apart”, “new sensation”, “need you tonight”…they are really really great songs. But one of the best INXS songs, “The stairs” is on “X”…along with “by my side” and “disappear” etc….As a whole “Achtung baby” and “X” make far more sense, are put together far better, and just in general have more appeal to them than “joshua tree” and “kick”… they sound more modern (especially X compared to Kick), are arguably more experimental (especially “Achtung” compared to “joshua tree”)…and are just better. 🙂

and that’s all i have to say about that.
