rammstein – air canada center, toronto, ontario

Adrienne2, Bliss and I headed up to Toronto to see Rammstein on their first time back to North America since…oh, Family Values in 1999. They are huge fans, me…I like them, they are fun, but being in German and all, I can’t say that I can sing along, or know any song titles or any of that. And the non english thing hinders my ability to really connect with the music. But it was still super fun and entertaining, and the music and show were great.

Opening band was Combichrist, who we saw with KMFDM and then again a few years ago on their own tour with Julien K. I’m only familiar with them through the shows, and they are a pretty good industrial band. They started right when doors open, so even though we got there at exactly 8pm, we missed a little bit.

Rammstein probably played a good 2 hours with, as expected, a great pyro show. Lots of plumes of fire, hand held shooters, face mask flame throwers, arm bands of fire, wings on fire, fire works, explosions, setting people on fire, a canon that shot foam (use your imagination haha). Yeah. Pyro. I was going to say it’s the best pyro show I’ve ever seen, but thinking about it, it may be the only pyro show I’ve seen. Regardless, it had to be the best one. Those Germans are crazy! I don’t know the setlist, and can’t find one. Good show, good music, very entertaining. Glad I got the chance to see them since they’ll probably never be back again.

dream

dream: i was a divorcee. i had been married for a short time when i was 18 or 19, but i never moved in with my husband, i stayed living with my parents. it didn’t last long and i filed for divorce. but i didn’t really remember any of it, and i didn’t ever tell anyone about it. i couldn’t remember what he looked like, or his last name, but his first was jerry. the only reason i remembered it and brought it up was because i was out with jerry seinfeld and kramer one day, and kramer asked if i knew a good lawyer, and i said, only the one i used for my divorce. they were both surprised i had been married. once i remembered, i realized i didn’t remember if the divorce was ever final, if we had gotten paper work to sign. so i was trying to remember his name so i could contact him and find out. i was looking through an old address book but there were multiple jerry’s listed in it, so i still wasn’t sure who he was.

life: is very uneventful. i really don’t do anything other than work and sit around at home. tired of winter, waiting for it to get nicer out so i can start biking in preparation for the 33 mile Ride for Roswell (please donate to me). i was going to the gym after work to bike but it’s so freaking boring i couldn’t take doing it for more than a half hour or about 3 miles. plus it was 4am and i didn’t really want to get home later than 5, and i couldn’t sleep well afterward (exercising too close to bed time). warmer weather will also (hopefully) motivate me to get out to urbex more.

but i don’t get much accomplished sitting at home all the time either. no motivation to do anything. i “want” to get a gallery show for my chernobyl photos, but that means i want someone to find me and offer it to me, and not me go seek one out lol. i could be researching galleries and working on an artist statement to apply for a show, but…nope. maybe one of these days.

nice weather will also mean garden time. aiming to plant less than 14 tomato plants this year hahaha.

there, a real (boring) update, not just a dream.

dream

dream: i was getting my hair cut and suddenly a little deer got into the shop. it was walking around and then it started biting my hand. it wasn’t really scared of anyone, so of course we figured it had rabies and i thought, great, i’m getting bitten by a rabid baby deer. we didn’t know what to do so someone said to call the ASPCA, but no one wanted to. i’m like what the hell, someone call and get it out of here so it will stop biting me. no one would so i got my phone out and was trying to look up the number while trying to avoid the deer but it kept following me.

dream

dream: for some unknown reason i was watching a tv special featuring 50cent. i can’t remember what songs he was playing, but i thought, these aren’t so bad. (tho i don’t remember the songs, i do know that they were not his own songs in real life). then he started a song and i thought, this sounds like “discipline”, and turns out it was…and trent was singing it as a special guest on 50cent’s special. he was playing a piano while singing, and doing like flips on it. very flamboyant like jerry lee lewis. i called adr2 because she never gets my text messages, and she actually answered. she didn’t say anything right away though and i could hear discipline through the phone so i knew she already had it on.

Tell All

Finished reading Tell All by Chuck Palahniuk….I used to call him my favourite author, but when you only like 3 of 10 books by said author, can he really be your favourite? I keep giving him another chance to produce brilliance and it just falls short.

Tell All is about a woman who essentially takes care of an aging movie star. I *think* it takes place in the past…in the golden age of the silver screen. The book is written like a gossip column, with lots of name dropping, text of the names emphasized, and really it’s lots and lots and LOTS of names from the past, most whom I didn’t know. The aging movie star meets a young stud, and the narrator warns her not to “fall” for him because he’s just using her to make a name for himself when she dies. That’s it, mostly.

It’s in 3 acts, and then several chapters in each. Act one could be 2 chapters, but instead is like, 15. It’s extremely boring, repetitive, with no plot. The plot doesn’t kick in until Act 2, with only a little bit of Act 1 intro needed. Then Act 2, which has a plot, is just as repetitive. Act 3 (which I didn’t realize had started), has a minor twist, but one that is not all that shocking or unexpected. Not like the way I was blown away with the twist of Invisible Monsters.

It is not funny, or slightly amusing, or clever. It’s unfortunately not really worth reading. It just annoyed me. I’d recommend passing on it.

dream

dream: i was at a u2 show, and there was a part of the show where bono would come up on stage on a bed from below, like he was madonna or someone. and he would always bring a girl on stage (i forget the song, it may not have even been a u2 song at first, but then it turned into “angels of harlem”). so somehow i ended up wandering around back stage and told cassie i was going to go down below to try to get pulled on stage during that part, and voila bono brought me on stage. so i got to dance with bono and then back in the crowd. but then i ended up getting pulled back on stage with the full band, and i got to meet them all and it was awesome.

Legends of Hip Hop Tour

Tonight was Salt n Pepa’s Legends of Hip Hop tour at Shea’s with Lindsay and Alex. I’ve seen Run DMC and Sugar Hill Gang, but this was really my first hip hop show. And it was quite an interesting experience. If you want to see an enthusiasic crowd with lots of participation, go to an old school hip hop show. It had to be the most energetic and excited crowd I’ve seen in a long time, if not ever. It was amusing. And I can’t say I fit in AT ALL, but it was a cool happy party vibe.

So the show was Rob Base, Kurtis Blow, Doug E Fresh, Whodini and Salt n Pepa. I can’t say I was really familiar with what got played, but I did recognize songs here and there, and I used to loooove SnP back in the 90s. Each set was 20-30 minutes I think, even SnP’s, and it was one after another (no set changes when you just have djs haha). SnP played what you would expect (Whatta Man, Shoop, Push It) and older stuff I sorta recognized but didn’t know real well.

It was cool to see, and just a very different experience from a rock show. Had fun, glad I went 🙂

dream

dream:

was at a nin show. on the floor but it was all seats, and at first amira was sitting next to me, but later that became sarah. adr2 and bliss were down the row a bit. it was a very strange show. only remember bits and pieces of it. the band kept changing, first i don’t know who was on stage, but then it changed and robin took over on guitar, and the other members changed too. then they started playing mr self destruct with all these “guests” on stage….like ali returned to do vocals on the song, but i was thinking the stage wasn’t set up the way it should be if ali was there for that song, with him actually up front on guitar and playing. and then trent wasn’t even there anymore, ali was just going to sing. then 2 girls who were on the large side, both wearing matching red and white striped shirts were on stage to sing. then the band changed again and robin was leaving, it was supposed to be the WT version of the band taking over but i really didn’t see it as being aaron and twiggy i was just sad robin was leaving. and this whole time everyone is sitting in the seats, and i’m like why aren’t we all rocking out, but the songs were all so weird and not right. then a video was playing and none of the band was on stage, and it made no sense and i asked sarah if this was supposed to be some lame showcase of fan made videos, and she didn’t know. then it seemed to be a giant ad for something, but it was weird and i thought maybe it was somehow related to year zero. then it showed a girl in a car and the light outside the car was all really bright, so we expected “the presence” to show up. the end.

dream

dream:

cassie and i and someone else were depressed and mad at trent reznor for some reason, and this other person (a guy) decided we were going to blow up trent’s apartment. so we got in somehow, and he set up bombs in trent’s wine cellar. the bombs were set up through the corks of each bottle. everything was set up and the timer was set, when cassie found some sort of information that said we shouldn’t be mad at trent and we decided to call off the bombing. we ran into the cellar to get the guy to shut the bomb off, which he was trying to do but it wasn’t working. the way the bombs were in the corks it caused the bottles to spray out wine as the countdown got closer to 0, so we’re running around the cellar trying to get the bombs to turn off, getting covered in wine as if it was coming out of a sprinkler system. he couldn’t get the bombs off and they exploded. it didn’t ruin the place tho, we ended up in the living room because we were stuck inside, no way out. we were stuck, and the cops were going to come and we were going to get caught, so we figured might as well drink…cuz trent’s apartment was apparently set up like a liquor store with racks of all kinds of booze, so we decided to drink some from every bottle of rum there was. we tried to figure out ways to escape the apartment, but i didn’t think the windows opened, plus it was a long drop to the ground. looking out the window we saw someone escaping out a window across the street, i thought at first that it was mark zuckerberg, but it was michael cera. then we saw 4 other people escaping out windows, and down poles and gutters. cassie figured out the window did open, but it was still a big drop down. then magically there was a ladder onto a fire escape, except that once you opened the window and went on the fire escape, it automatically called 911. we decided to go anyway, and started running to escape from the cops. ended up in a parking ramp, where either we had a car already or we were going to steal one. but we had to pay for parking first, only problem was we had never gotten a ticket so we didn’t know how much. then i saw a sign that said to pay whatever you wanted, $2, $4, $6, so i paid 2 in the machine, but then we couldn’t find the car cuz we were on level 3 but the car was supposed to be on level 19 (something about leaving the car on the top level because that’s how we got into trent’s apt). the end.

woke up from it at 5am and had to txt cassie about it right away before i forgot it.

30 Seconds to Mars – Rapids Theatre, Niagara Falls NY

This will be a quick review of the show. I am only familiar with 30stm’s first album, and then some radio singles, but I figured it was a night off of work, and it should be a good rock show to balance out seeing Salt n Pepa in a few days haha.

Opener was Middle Class Rut, and were fairly generic. Just 2 guys, singer/guitarist and drummer/singer. The guitarist would be better suited in a Jane’s Addiction cover band because he sounded just like Perry Farrel.

To be honest 30stm was underwhelming. I’ve seen many many bands where I have been unfamiliar with all or most of their catalog, who have still impressed me. I went into this show hoping to leave wanting to get their other albums, but alas that didn’t happen. They didn’t play anything from their 1st album, so I really only knew 4 or 5 songs, and those not very well. As Bliss put it at the end of the show, it was pretty much “the audience sings to 30stm”, with Jared Leto singing a few words and holding out the mic for the audience to sing. I half think it’s because the way he sings seems like it would be difficult to recreate live night after night, or that he just is not a good singer, I don’t really know. But it was alot of audience participation and not alot of Jared singing. I wondered if they just had an off night, and Leighanne, who had seen them twice before, said it wasn’t the best show she’s seen, so I guess my take isn’t all that off.

Now Rapids Theatre…I had been there for the Tea Party in 04 or 05, and Lacuna Coil/Stone Sour in 07, then it closed for a while. And wow what an improvement. It no longer feels dirty, and like the decorative ceiling is going to fall down on you. New owners spent millions on restoration work and it shows. It was a great place to see a show even when it was falling down, but definitely more comfortable now. It’s a good size for a small venue, interesting leveled floor setup and a nice balcony. I hope they have more good shows coming in the future.
