i come home to the u2 album leak, and the nin photoblog showing 2 songs of the australian setlist which OMG!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! that’s all i’ll say since I know adr2 won’t want to know what 2 songs they are. but !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
bono quote
“God is interested in truth, and only in truth. And that’s why God is more interested in Rock & Roll music than Gospel… Many gospel musicians can’t write about what’s going on in their life, beacuse it’s not allowed ..If you can’t write about what’s really going on in the world and your life, because it’s all happy-clappy… Is God interested in that? I mean, ‘Please, don’t patronize Me! I want to go the Nine-Inch-Nails gig, they’re talking the truth!
-Bono
Get on your boots!
more thoughts on “get on your boots”
1. like i said, when it starts, it is not a u2 song. when i got it on phill’s phone, there were downloading issues, and the song “was not available”, so when it worked i thought maybe it wasn’t the right one. but bono comes in and he has a distinctive voice proving it to be u2 afterall.
2. the closest to “molten metal from mars” as u2 is going to get. the edge’s guitar is kick ass and dirty. adam’s got a funky bass line throughout. and i think i hear the hint of a drum machine…0_0
3. it’s got an old 60s vibe to me. part of it is the layered harmonizing vocals, part is the guitar.
4. the tempo of the vocals, or style of singing, in the verses is reminiscent of “vertigo”
5. omg just realized what the claps in the background remind me of…peaches “fuck the pain away”. LOL
6. the end, bono “chants” (approx the 2:30 mark), very cool. then the guitar kicks back in, that’ll be great live.
7. “i don’t want to talk about wars between nations….not right now” hahaha
my reservations
1. lyrically…i can’t figure out what the song is about. and it’s not super stunning with lyrics like “sexy boots”, “fuzzy boots”, “satan has a bomb scare”. again, no profound bono lyrics here.
2. i really really liked “vertigo” when it was released. leighanne and i listened to it on repeat for about 2 hours, and we were both very excited for the album. then “how to dismantle an atomic bomb” came out and it was severely lacking compared to what “vertigo” had promised…so i’m still hesitant for the album, but more optimistic having heard this and having seen the album cover.
i picture it having a fun video, like performances in the 60s with girls in go go boots, and the camera zooming in and out on edge’s guitar parts. maybe even like a parody of the 60s like those breaks in Austin Powers where he is with a band haha. definitely something better than the cgi-fest that was “vertigo”
it makes me happy right now, and i needed it cuz i had a depressing dream that was going to ruin my day. not anymore!
Get on your boots!
new u2 single was released last night around 2am. i borrowed phil’s iphone to get it off itunes but only had a short time to listen to it in the break room. listening now, my only comment at the moment is….if you heard it start on the radio you would have no idea it was u2, and that is a good thing 🙂
stay
it took me a long time to fully appreciate this song. i’d very much like to see it back in the setlist
Green light, Seven Eleven
You stop in for a pack of cigarettes
You don’t smoke, don’t even want to
Hey now, check your change
Dressed up like a car crash
Your wheels are turning but you’re upside down
You say when he hits you, you don’t mind
Because when he hurts you, you feel alive
Hey babe, is that what it is
Red lights, gray morning
You stumble out of a hole in the ground
A vampire or a victim
It depend’s on who’s around
You used to stay in to watch the adverts
You could lip sync to the talk shows
And if you look, you look through me
And when you talk, you talk at me
And when I touch you, you don’t feel a thing
If I could stay…
Then the night would give you up
Stay… and the day would keep its trust
Stay… and the night would be enough
Faraway, so close
Up with the static and the radio
With satellite television
You can go anywhere
Miami, New Orleans
London, Belfast and Berlin
And if you listen I can’t call
And if you jump, you just might fall
And if you shout, I’ll only hear you
If I could stay…
Then the night would give you up
Stay… then the day would keep its trust
Stay… with the demons you drowned
Stay… with the spirit I found
Stay… and the night would be enough
Three o’clock in the morning
It’s quiet and there’s no one around
Just the bang and the clatter
As an angel runs to ground
Just the bang
And the clatter
As an angel
Hits the ground
now i wait to see what the ninhotline’s april fools prank will be this year…
dream
dream: i was being driven around a futuristic, yet a bit run down city apparently in belgium. there were some things that were super modern and sleek and nice looking, and other things like bridges that had big pieces missing out of them as if the city had been left to rot for decades. it almost felt like it had once been and olympic host city but there was really nothing else relating to that idea. there were some other people in the car but i don’t know who. we were driving and i just went “oh my god look at how amazing that is” and it’s the golden arch of u2’s popmart stage. we were being taken to a popmart show. it was at a large stadium, wembley like, and we were taken to the very front, first enclosure. it was alot like the nin saratoga show, where there was a very small GA section with hardly anyone in it, 100 people or so. but at this u2 show there was maybe 10 people in it, including us. and those people came and went so that sometimes i was the only one there. bono, short popmart hair and all, came off the stage and right to me since no one else was there, and leaned his forehead against mine while he sang “sunday bloody sunday”. it was a bit weird and very intimate, like i knew him for ages. then someone appeared on stage all mad at me, because we had our heads together and now they were going to have to stop the show and re-calibrate bono’s ear monitor to make sure that he was still singing in sync with the rest of the band. the guy made bono get back on stage and they stopped the song to do whatever it was they were going to do to the monitors.
and wtf sabres. i shake my fist at you.
dream
dream: not sure why now, but cassie gave me a drawing of The Edge that she did, and it was actually a card. inside was love letter as if written by edge to me. there was some reason she gave it to me, i was sad or something. then we were in a mass amount of people all going in the same direction, and the real edge was actually there and we walked by him and he wasn’t wearing a hat. i wanted to get him to sign the drawing of him but the crowd kept moving so i couldn’t get close to him again.
then something about me and jenn getting sabres autographs by hanging out in a bathroom someplace ha.
i started a new sewing project, a sleeveless hoodie. first try so just using the black knit adr and i got in toronto in the summer. i didn’t like the entire pattern tho so i’m leaving parts out, and i tried to lengthen the pattern but i don’t think i did it long enough still. oh well. we’ll see how it turns out. there’s alot they’re asking me to do in the instructions that i don’t know what it’s saying ha (esp the pockets). oh well. i’ll just make it up as i go along. i’m good at that.
U23D
FINALLY, i got to see u2 3d. leighanne and james and i headed out to see the only showing of the day tonight. i would say it was definitely worth it. even if the visuals had sucked, i just loved having the chance to hear great songs, live and at full volume. i wish more bands would have their concert films shown in theatres, i’d so go to all of them (i’m thinking about going to the rolling stones one when it comes out – cheaper than actually seeing them again ha).
so the movie. the 3d…when we got in it was during the last preview, also in 3d, for…journey to the center of the earth?? and wow. flashlights flying at my head, along with rocks. and i immediately thought – i am going to get such a headache from this…i was not looking forward to it. it took a bit to get used to the 3d. there ends up being so many levels your eyes don’t know what to focus on, and often wouldn’t focus on whatever was “closest” to you. after a few songs it got better and much of the time i forgot i was wearing silly glasses and had no troubles. every now and then something would show up on screen that was hard to focus on again, and movement (especially adam) was sometimes weird, but for the most part it was pretty cool. the performance itself, leighanne and i both thought bono was holding back a lot. given how he usually acts, kissing the camera and stuff, his 3d actions seemed pretty tame. we figure someone must have told him to calm down for the filming. on the other side, i thought edge seemed way more into it than in the past – just really hard strumming on the guitar and massive “Edge stomp”. i noticed a “trent edit” job during “miss sarajevo” where one shot bono was using a mic stand, and the next shot he was holding the mic – and at one point it showed both shots at the same time…hah. oops.
the setlist was short, i think 80 min or so, much shorter than a real show. i’d go again just for “bullet the blue sky” and “the fly” which was just beyond brilliant. “bullet” loud and live is always a good thing, even tho i prefer a “bono rant” ending to “johnny come marching home”. but nevertheless, edge guitar on bullet is killer. “the fly” took full advantage of the 3d, with flying words, letters, sentences etc like the zoo tv version. the song sounded fantastic, and i love bono performing it (yes i even love the hat). i was smiling through the whole song. they ended with “with or without you”….then “yahweh” during credits…but i had to go to the bathroom so bad i left, doesn’t hurt that i can’t stand the song. it also didn’t seem to be a performance from the first 30 seconds i saw when leaving…just audio with the credits. had it been a performance i MIGHT have stayed….no probably not 🙂 james still can’t fathom why we can’t stand the song. worst. bono. lyrics. ever.
i’m always in awe of crowd shots in concert films, and just the mass of humanity present, and how i’d hate that…and then i remember, i’ve been IN that and it’s not as bad as it looks ha. i’ve been a part of 80k at the old wembley stadium, and it was really ok.
anyway. well worth the price of admission, and if it was playing in the afternoons i’d probably go again. i don’t see myself getting the chance to go on another day off before it stops showing. oh, we got to keep the glasses haha.
stopped at denny’s after before heading home. my head only hurt a tiny bit, really less than normal, which i was SO thankful for. i was figuring for another “3:10 to yuma” make me barf headache. hahah.
aaaand…the sabres had a fantastic 8-4 win, with our new guy Steve Bernier contributing the first 2 goals and an assist. Welcome to Buffalo.
books
i’ve read alot of books since christmas, and now i don’t remember what they were haha. i did finally read “u2 by u2”. it was pretty good. i can’t say i really learned anything new about the band, and alot of what they said came from interviews i had already read so it felt a bit like de ja vu. I did put down a a few quotes from the book…
Bono – “one thing I really liked on the reel-to-reel was a folky duo called Hunky Dory. I loved that duo. It was years later I discovered it was David Bowie and Hunky Dory was the name of the album.”
Edge- ” I discovered that being a loner and having a superiority complex works quite well, as your distorted self image is never challenged by engaging in any way with the rest of humanity”
Edge – ” I once said to Bob Dylan, “people are going to be playing your songs for thousands of years.” He said, “Man they’re going to be listening to your songs too. It’s just no one’s going to know how to play them.” Sometimes, I might add, that includes us.”
Bono – ” One of my definitions of art is the discovery of beauty in unexpected places.”
In the meantime I’ve still been plodding through “A fiction of the past, the 60s in American History.” I got through the music in culture section and it made me want to read more about bands from that time…so I have bob dylan’s autobio on the pile to read, and i borrowed “the doors by the doors” from a friend at work. it was pretty interesting as i really knew nothing about the history of the doors or jim morrison. it was just like the u2 book, exerpts from jim morrison interviews, and seemingly new interviews with the other band members specifically for the book, plus tons of photos.
I read “A Canticle for Lebowitz” a post apocolyptic book my mom gave me when she finished it, which was pretty good but not mind blowing or anything.
And now I’m reading “Take A Walk on the Dark Side: Rock and Roll Myths, Legends and Curses” by R Gary Patterson. I’ve heard him on Coast to Coast AM a few times and he is full of interesting stories of rock bands (mostly brit invasion 60s/70s era), so I picked up this book. Well…the stories are interesting, but boy does it need another edit. Things just seem very out of order. You read one paragraph and then he switches subjects to something that seems very irrelevant, but then pages later there will be a random sentence that really REALLY should have gone with the paragraph ages earlier. It also seems that sometimes he is grasping at straws to make a connection between artists, or themes or events. Like The Buddy Holly Curse…just because someone dies in the same month, years later, doesn’t mean anything. It’s a 1 in 12 chance haha. In a chapter about Alestair Crowley he mentions Daryl Hall (from Hall and Oats? I dunno…) and the things he has said about studying Crowley…and at the end follows up with “Ironically, Hall’s birthday is October 11th, Crowley’s is October 12th”….like that has any relevance at all. He also over uses the word “ironic” and may be misusing it as well (or maybe I’m just missing the irony). There have also been a few things mentioned that relate to The Tea Party…lyrics to a Robert Johnson blues song that are also in Sun Going Down, and a reference to the book Master and Marguerita. So…it’s amusing but could have been put together better, and it really doesn’t need so many “ironic” grasps at straws to connect things. These stories are interesting on their own.
u2
you can watch full episodes of america’s next top model on the cw website….omg i’m so lame, i’m excited about it since i’ve been missing a lot cuz of hockey. haha what’s wrong with me?
U2 says new record will be different hahahahah yeah right bono, we heard that before, like before the last record. what a joke…
“U2 in dancefloor shock!” joked Bono. “Normally when you play a U2 tune, it clears the dancefloor. And that may not be true of this. There’s some trance influences. But there’s some very hardcore guitar coming out of the Edge. Real molten metal. It’s not like anything we’ve ever done before, and we don’t think it sounds like anything anyone else has done either.”
sure bono, you also said the last record was a “guitar album” hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha
but i certainly hope to god he’s right
