snow

time to bitch about the weather.

when i was a kid, i don’t remember there constantly being winter storm warnings issued when we were going to get 2 inches of snow. now, again, i was a kid, i didn’t pay that much attention. but even in college when i checked the weather every day to know what to wear to walk to class, i don’t remember there being constant winter storm warnings every time it was going to snow. i swear, every day now, i look at yahoo weather and there is a warning from the national weather service about snow. IT’S WINTER, it’s going to snow sometimes and we don’t need a storm warning every other day for an inch of snow. besides that, almost every warning they’ve issued so far, has ended up being wrong and these “storms” have not produced what they were supposed to.

now all week this weekend was pegged to be a massive snow storm, with 15-20 inches of snow, and high winds on sunday for blizzard conditions etc. it was supposed to start snowing saturday night, so that there would be 10 inches on the ground by the time i got out of work. there was about 1″. then we were supposed to get another 10 inches by the time i’d wake up on sunday…there is about 6″. it’s barely snowing, and they claim we’ll get another 6″ by 7pm. right.

thank you national weather service for scaring the crap out of everyone about a major storm, and having it not really occur, again. i’m wicked disappointed, and tired of the constant wrong warnings.

sailing to rome

for once i had something to do on a day off. i was asked to go shoot a band tonight, called Sailing To Rome (i’d link their myspace but i’m too lazy). a friend at work sorta bankrolls them, and mentioned the show, and if i’d give it a shot. sure. my presense royally pissed off the girl who usually shoots them though. don’t worry honey, my photos sucked, your “job” is not in jeopardy haha. they’re a screamo band, but actually pretty good.

shooting was an experiment, because aside from using my super zoom minolta to shoot a nin show from row s, this is not something i’ve ever done before. i’d like to give it a 2nd try, and do things differently. mainly i shot in raw figuring they’d need a lot of editing because diablo is wicked dark, switched to jpeg for a bit because i was running out of memory cards, and i was trying all sorts of different things and settings. well my hatred of shooting in raw continues. aside from the extreme red tint, the jpeg shots looked much more like i was expecting them to look, and much more like what i like about concert photography. the raw shots all end up looking way too processed (as they are) and noisy and crap. i know i have no clue what i’m doing in raw, but even barely touching them, it was crap. in the end i’ve come to the conclusion that rob sheridan must shoot in jpeg. that, or he’s really skilled at raw and i don’t give him that much credit LOL. so next time, if there is one, all jpeg.

the band that was on before Sailing to Rome did a Hedwig cover – Wicked Little Town. wow. it was only half bad. i was mainly more shocked than anything, and i wondered if anyone else in the bar knew the song. the singer didn’t sing that good, but the band sounded great on it.

left shortly after their set, 1 drink + not eating + my fucked up head = pain. needed to get home and eat and take pain killers.

i was very happy to have not been home alone watching the sabres get slaughtered by LA. the bar put it on after the zombie movie, and just seeing the first period was horrible. thankfully the band played during the 2nd. 😛

the rest of the month gets pretty busy for my days off…well i have next monday off randomly because work is throwing a cocktail party for all 5 year employees…they gave us all the day off, which i’m not all that thrilled about, because it’s apparently unpaid. i didn’t ask for the day off. the party is 6-9, i was going to go eat, and then just go to work at 8. but whatever. jenn and i might go out after, we’ll see. next wed is islanders game with adr2, then xmas party and secret santa with work friends thurs. following week is Dirty Dancing on stage in toronto with heather on wed, ellicott development xmas party after if i make it home in time, then ctrc xmas party on thursday. i’m not sure what day aunt trudy gets in (or when adr1 gets in), but she’ll be here in time for xmas itself. busy busy. then of course, what we’ve all been waiting for, THE ICE BOWL. i don’t care if it’s cold, or if it’s snowing buckets, please god don’t let it be windy.

u2

you can watch full episodes of america’s next top model on the cw website….omg i’m so lame, i’m excited about it since i’ve been missing a lot cuz of hockey. haha what’s wrong with me?

U2 says new record will be different hahahahah yeah right bono, we heard that before, like before the last record. what a joke…

“U2 in dancefloor shock!” joked Bono. “Normally when you play a U2 tune, it clears the dancefloor. And that may not be true of this. There’s some trance influences. But there’s some very hardcore guitar coming out of the Edge. Real molten metal. It’s not like anything we’ve ever done before, and we don’t think it sounds like anything anyone else has done either.”

sure bono, you also said the last record was a “guitar album” hahahahahahahhahahahahahahahahahahahahahahahaha

but i certainly hope to god he’s right

boo

it’s not been a good thanksgiving for alot of my friends…mary was admitted to the hospital thurs night with a bacterial infection. her lip got real swollen, hurt, looked like she got punched. it spread all into her jaw and face, so the hospital admitted her with a bacterial infection. people at work are paranoid she has a MRSA staph infection. and frankly i’m sorta paranoid too. so not telling my mom about this one, cuz she’s scared i’ll get one just from all the germs at work to begin with, let alone a friend having it.

jenn’s mom was in the hospital for something, but got out friday. pat and heather lost their baby (5 months along) 🙁 🙁 🙁 3 people at work had family members die this week. tis not been good at all…

hope everyone else had a good/better thanksgiving

dream

it snowed/is snowing. kitty is fogging up the windows watching the snow fall ha

and i dreamed trent called me. someone called and caller ID came up as trent, i tried to answer but the call was disconnected. hours later, another call and i answer, and he asks “why didn’t you call me back?” and i’m like, who is this, and he says trent. so then i’m sorta freaking out, although not at all wondering how he had my phone number. apparently we had talked before for some reason, i just never expected another call. so he’s talking like we go way back, about regular kind of stuff. he was selling his house and someone had come to look at it that day. i kept having trouble hearing him, and then he’d also stop talking and there’d just be long periods of silence. i didn’t know what to talk about, so i asked when the tour was starting. he was silent, thinking about it, and i was like, i know i should know, but i suck as a fan haha. so we were going to hang up but i had to bring up the terminal and the suggestion that he play a spiral only show, or a bridge school type show at the building. i explained the whole thing about the terminal, and he didn’t say anything..and i was like, are you still there. and he said yeah he was just writing all the info down.

also dreamed that dan and i went to explore what was left of spaulding fibre. we don’t see any workers around so we went in and were wandering around. we started climbing this sketchy ladder to figure out what this big tube thing was in one of the rooms. we get to the roof and there were people up there. oh shit. i tried to go back down the ladder but dan didn’t, cuz he figured, we’re screwed, who cares. but these workers totally ignored us, and went on their merry way. then for some reason there was a days inn in the middle of this abandoned factory. wtf. and we had reservations there. so then we were chilling in the hotel room, which had a gift shop selling random things that had been found inside the factory as they demolished it – lots of stuffed animals for some reason. the next day i guess, i want to take a shower, but all the showers were fucked up…no shower curtains, absolutely no room to fit into the shower, etc. i kept getting pissed off, and eventually was like, fuck this i’m just going home to take a shower, i live down the street!

hockey

toni lydman’s game time playlist, SO METAL! hahah rock. oh got some more autographs on tues morning, but still no connolly, bum.

and it’s sooooo nice to be at a winning game. yay. buffalo over evil ottawa 4-2. such a great atmosphere, and with the 2 earlier losses i had forgotten what it was like. we had 2 ottawa fans next to us somehow, and that was interesting. they weren’t too obnoxious, the girl next to me danced when ottawa scored and her boyfriend told her “not to act like a leafs fan” LOL. after buffalo’s first goal, she said she wanted to go home hahah. the people around us weren’t too obnoxious to them either, just when they left with 5 min left, the people behind us sang “na na na na good bye” at them. so now the winning combo is white vintage jersey, dippin dots, and no beer! next game is dec 12th with adr2.

there is currently a severe weather watch for flooding. and it’s hilarious. seriously, this is in the national weather service bulletin: “WHEN ENCOUNTERING FLOODED ROADS MAKE THE SMART CHOICE…TURN AROUND…DONT DROWN.”

new music

robopanda is horrifying

http://www.huffingtonpost.com/jermaine-dupri/a-good-album-is-more-than_b_73413.html article by jermain dupris about the record industry and itunes. he has some points, but keeps stressing the purchase of singles and that if you want a song you should buy the album and not just the single song on itunes….um…did he forget about 10 years ago before mp3s and napster and itunes, there were these things called cassette and cd singles…you could always just buy “the hot song” without the rest of the album. so what’s the difference?

today was the big release day. the year zero remixed album, and rerelease of the joshua tree.

yz remix – overall it seems to be something i’d listen to more than once, which i can’t say about the rest of the nin remix albums. saul’s lyrics over “hyperpower” is neat. and thank god for ali and modwheelmood, for redeeming “the great destroyer” by taking out the worst 3 seconds of nin history. i quite like their version. the fan mix is of “my violent heart” is pretty good. ladytron’s “the beginning of the end” could be absolutely fantastic if not for the synth beeps. leave them in, that’s fine, just turn them the fuck down. why are they so loud? they sound so out of place. otherwise, great remix. the “closer” addition at the end was surprising. saul’s “survivalism” i think is the same version played before the shows, or at least i have heard it before somewhere (and i don’t think i ever listened to the singles…/badfan) “capital g” is mostly obnoxious and i’ll most likely always fast forward. “vessel” doesn’t sound all that different, and it’s hard to improve on perfection anyway :). “the warning” is a great improvement on a rather forgettable song. “me, i’m not”, on right now…i don’t know how people can remix songs like this and still say it’s the same song, or even remotely related (and this one completely isn’t!). why, cuz 9 minutes in they’ll throw in one lyric? i knew when i saw that it was 14 minutes long that i’ll never ever listen to it. oh, there was some trent breathing noises. well that was 14 minutes of my life i’ll never get back. “another version of the truth” string quartet, fantastic. i love that kind of stuff though. the middle kept making me think of the tea party’s “save me”. “in this twilight” is very nice. “zero-sum” interesting, has a groove, pretty good.

i can’t find the vinyl anywhere (er at the places that sell vinyl still), looks like i’ll have to order it eventually now.

and even though i don’t particularly like the joshua tree, i did buy the remastered box set. it has the remastered album, bonus audio cd of bsides and unreleased songs, and bonus dvd with a live show, documentary and videos. and a book and prints. basically i bought it because of the “wave of sorrow” video i posted last week. it just really struck me as being so fantastic, and i’m sorta dying for some u2 that goes back to what they were (even if i don’t like the joshua tree era), poetic and intelligent, and not this fluffy, lyrically disastrous, half hearted attempt at meaningful music that we got on “how to dismantle an atomic bomb”. i’d take JT era over the current one any day haha. my problem with JT…i just don’t think i’ve ever really “gotten it”…i read about what JT stands for, what the songs are about, the meaning, etc etc, but I just don’t get it. there is absolutely no personal connection in the songs for me (except maybe “Running To Stand Still”), they don’t in any way strike me, and for me that’s a big part of the musical experience.

i hope to god they do this sort of rerelease for Achtung Baby :), few more years…
