i’ve been playing a new addictive game called babel deluxe. it’s a collection of different word games. and what i find odd is the words they chose to use in some of the games. words like erotic, fetish, nipples, sexually, semen etc…words left out of most “family” word games…i find it amusing, but i think if i was a parent and saw my kid playing a game where those type of words were flying across the screen i’d be a bit irritated. at least they don’t use “gagball” hahahahahah

entertaining adr2 and bliss tonight. my mom went crazy making vegan dips for them when all i asked her to make was hummus hahah. hopefully they eat them cuz i myself am not a strange dip fan.

the casino has a new monopoly slot machine, i think it’s something related to rock and roll, because one of the screens shows the monopoly man rockin out with a guitar. i SO want a capture of that for an icon hahah. i used to be able to look at machines on igt’s site, but apparently not anymore. nor at bally’s site (eric? you know if bally makes these machines?)

book reviews

tho i love reading, i only really do it before i go to sleep. so it takes me a few weeks to get through a normal sized book. time for a book review.

“The Good the Bad and the Mad: Some weird people in American history” – a collection of short bio’s on interesting people. quick and interesting read. most of the people i had never heard of, so it was new info for me.

“A Brief History of The Cold War” – fascinating (to me) book that gives an overview of the Cold War starting from the Bolshevik revolution up to the fall of the Berlin Wall and collapse of the USSR. Really interesting, lots of information, and lots of things that make you just sick now with all that’s going on in Iraq. Some quotes:
“Democracy is, after all, the will of the majority, however misguided, stupid, or ignorant that majority will be.” SO TRUE.
“He was promptly stigmatized by the left as ‘ill equipped for the great responsibility he bears…bellicose, ignorant and with a simplistic view of the world, pieced together from journals of right-wing opinion and Hollywood b-movies………The President (Reagan) was characterized as a ‘stupid cowboy’ and a political simpleton in the liberal press in both Europe and America, much to the delight of political cartoonists.” – Such a good way to characterize Dubya as well.
Regarding the Berlin Wall – “President Bush (Sr) was slower to react and watched the events in Berlin unfold on television in a state of bewildered disbelief. Richard Gephardt’s soundbite on his President’s reaction went to the heart of the White House’s pedestrian approach to the momentous events of 1989: ‘As the walls of the modern Jericho come tumbling down, we have a President who is inadequate to the moment…’ ”
Bush Sr regarding the attempted coup in USSR: “In an astonishing remark he called the attempted coup ‘extra-constitutional’, whatever that meant, and called for ‘prudence’ ” hahha

The main problelm with the book, I found, was that he uses abbreviations that we are apparently supposed to know, but don’t. So half the time I was confused as to what agency or organization he was talking about. I found out at the end that there was a glossary. He also frequently uses french sayings to describe things. While I know what raison d’etre means, most of the other ones I didn’t. There’s no point except to sound pompous and arrogant. In a book that is supposed to be an easy read and easy to understand, things like that make it seem too academic for the general population. Good book though.

“Yes Man” – fun book, apparently true story, about a man who is told by a stranger to “say yes more.” He takes up the suggestion vowing to say yes to everything he comes across – from penis enlargement pills to adopting elderly people and traveling to singapore. Amusing and funny, somewhat inspiring, and uplifting. quote that i LOLed at “I decided very quickly that if i was approached by any monk named either Professor Plum or Colonel Mustard, i’d be out the door, in the car, with a five-iron. Which is a scenario Clue never seemed to cover.” hahahah

“Voices from Chernobyl” – intersting collection of interviews and first hand accounts of the nuclear accident at Chernobyl in the early 80s. very recommended. however it assumes you know something about what happened there. easy and interesting read even if you have no clue.

I am now reading a book called “Do fish drink water?” which is apparently a collection of questions and their answers. After the animal section, I’d say it’s interesting and a quick read. Must remember to take it to my hida scan tomorrow since they said it could take up to 4 hours for my gall bladder to cooperate.

With finishing all these books, I think I’m going to join bookmooch.com. It’s a free service where you list old books you don’t need anymore, and can look for books you want to read. You get points for each book you list, which you can redeem to get a book. All you pay for is shipping to other moochers.

from atu2.com “Comment: Matt Cooper: It’s About Time Someone Told Bono Just to Shut Up and Sing” ROFL. i almost passed the article by on my rss reader cuz i’m out of love with u2, but then i was like wait, did that say shut up bono? hahaha too bad the article is about u2 evading irish taxes by moving their publishing company to the netherlands.

one of the nights david was here, the door didn’t latch shut so the cat pushed it open and spent the night wandering the basement and stairway…and now the cat tries to get out all the time, and just did on my way in. chased him around the basement, finally got him back in and he has not stopped meowing for 2 seconds since. SHUT UP CAT!

i was invited to join a really hilarious group on flickr….http://flickr.com/groups/onnotice/….on notice. create your own on notice board a la stephen colbert and the colbert report (one of the best shows on tv). i haven’t been able to think of anyone to put on notice but i’m sure if i really think about it, it won’t be too hard. just have to go through 1 shift of work i suspect hahah

speaking of work, i have THE worst schedule next weekend. 10-6 fri, 10-6 sat, then 5-1 sunday. ok i managed to give my 10-6 fri to someone else, but saturday, the more important of the 2, i have not…so pretty much i’ll be working til 6, coming home to sleep, getting up at 3 and going back to work. wtf. totally complained to the scheduler about the 5 months of 10-6 shifts every weekend. i’ve had just about enough. plus, it’ll be another week of most likely only 34 hours…can’t get a 40 hour week to save my life.

and on the way home i got myself into a situation that could have had a CSI ending. near the 190 interchange there was this minivan parked in the turning lane with this guy standing outside of it. the car in front of me stopped and was talking to the guy, then a woman comes out of the van. meanwhile i’m stuck behind them waiting to make my left turn onto the 190 and this car comes up next to me and wants me to roll down the window. it’s an asian guy trying to get to buffalo so i tell him to get on the 190. the car in front of me leaves, and the guy he had been talking to hears me giving directions to the asian guy, so he comes and asks me for directions. he’s hispanic with limited english and is trying to get to the blvd but he’s making no sense. i finally just tell him to get on 190 and give up. then i realize i totally could have been in a crime set up, where the one person distracts me as someone comes on the other side of my car and like shoots me or robs me or something. turned out ok but hahahha….

new work coming in another post. for those who didn’t read the friends only urbex posts, i got to use david’s old nikon d70 dslr…it was sorta proof that the quality of the camera does not make for better pictures, only better digital files hahaha. but i did get some stuff i liked from the nursing home.

thursday i had to go see the stomach specialist about the abdomen pain that was diagnosed last year as an ulcer. i really hope nurse practitioners get paid alot, because they do all the work. in the end, they both thought it was gall bladder, and ordered an ultrasound for me, which i had today. the dr said if its negative, they’ll do this other scan, and if that’s negative they’d do a scope to see if it wasn’t an ulcer after all. if it turned out that i did have gall stones they’d send me to a surgeon to have it out.

so i had the ultrasound and while the guy who did it didn’t tell me this, i heard him tell a few others that i had gall stones. i have to have this other test anyway on tuesday, but if i have stones, the dr said i’d have to have it out, so i’m assuming that i’ll be having surgery soon. i have to call the office next week for the results, and what to do next.

work again blah. should be going to silver creek sunday with dustin and this kid who’s name i forget, crap haha.

thursday

thursday brought more deinal for us as far as locations…david and i headed out to the east side, first passing spaulding fibre which had a few cars parked behind the fences, not a good sign. we also went by wickwire steel and didn’t see any obvious entrance, especially one where we wouldn’t be spotted – as the property in front of the site have active businesses. ok, off to our target destination of church of the transfig. denied. aside from not being able to find the rumored entrance now that the doors are locked, there were also people sitting on a porch of the building directly next to the church. they stopped talking as i tried to look into the windows of this shed thing. ok next…sacred heart church, also near the terminal. i had looked at a map to find the location, seemed easy enough. except we drove around for an hour and a half not finding the street. asked people at a gas station, followed their directions, still didn’t find the street. at this point we noticed smoke coming from something in the first ward, so we drove over there to see what was on fire. turned out to be a house, but for a moment i thought “what a great photo op it would be if one of the elevators spontaneously combusted.” on driving back towards the terminal from the first ward, what street do we find, the one we were looking for the entire time. i then realized that james, lei and i had driven by this church 2 years ago and i had refused to get out of the car due to the neighborhood. no obvious entrance plus the fact that people were around, and that there is a group working on restoring and reopening the church made us leave pretty quickly. ok now what. i didn’t want to go to the orphanage again, and it turns out david hadn’t been to concrete central so we headed there. spent a bit of time there, got lunch at the place with the biggest pieces of pie ever, then dropped him off at the terminal while i went to the doctor. back to the terminal after my appt for the board meeting, then back home once it was dark.

had a good time. still mad the nursing home foiled me. i figure just wait a few weeks for the ghetto kids to take care of it hahaha. off to go through my photos.

wednesday

wednesday brought david coming into town – late, got detained by the canadians for an hour – just as chris and alex arrived. the plan was to try to hit up st mary’s manor, an old nursing home in niagara falls. someone had told me about “a nursing home” in the falls, but no name, and that is what i came across. unfortunately the building foiled us. it appeared as if it was just recently boarded up. we checked the perimeter 3 times, with nothing coming out of it. gah. i’m irritated haha. so driving around, we tried to find the abandoned church off main street jerry had mentioned to me awhile ago. we think we found it…but it was not abandoned. it was in bad disrepair, but your typical poor ghetto church. who knows though. so driving around more we come across mount st mary’s long term care nursing home…now i wonder exactly which nursing home this person was talking about haha. this one proved an easy target so we spent some time in there. not entirely exciting, but a new place none the less. i got to try out david’s old nikon d70 with my lens, and whatever cutting the digital did with the film lens it was quite tolerable. which is good for if i finally do decide to get one, i don’t need to buy a lens right away. afterwards i had the brilliant idea to head down to beth steel to photograph the coke plant at sunset.

headed down to beth, and started to approach the field when a big dump truck came up to go through the gate. i think they were all quite surprised that i didn’t care the guy could obviously see what we were doing. my philosophy is if you act like you’re supposed to be there, people won’t question you. so i went ahead through the field towards the buildings. no one bothered us. however once on site, i could hear some kind of construction equipment at the coke plant. as the others worked in the building i tried to find out what was going on at the coke plant and tried to decide whether i cared or not. in the end i cared, so i stuck around in the building with the others. in the end i think it was just one guy in a back hoe working on a building but i still didn’t want to risk it. i definitely want to get back at sunset though, i guess it’ll have to be on a sunday.

david and i cased the psych center, with instructions i had gotten on how to gain entry…they didn’t make any sense, and checking it out in person, i don’t know what they were talking about. oh well. spent the rest of the night at the apt watching tv.

let’s see what’s been going on

i gave in and went back to walmart to look at fabric and patterns. bought way too much fabric for what i was making but that’s ok. just have to do something else with it. so i made this thing and it took me an obscene amount of time, but then again i had to make sure to read all the instructions 1000 times, and then make it harder than it was supposed to be cuz i got creative. and i got totally confused at the end and was trying to figure it out with adr on IM hahaha. eventually it worked out. finished it today… i think it took like 10 hrs total LOL. gonna take pics when i get my digi back from the parents house.

i got my colored contacts on wed. i had ordered green but they were out so i got aqua…and i thought no way are these gonna show up on my dark eyes. but they do. of course, they’re not quite the color the photos show them as, but they definitely are a weird cadillac blue color. i think they sorta look frightening hahah. i dunno it might just be me. 26 years with brown eyes will do that. wore them to work tonight and mary was the only one who noticed. she said they looked pretty but she also said my extensions were nice but said they looked terrible to other ppl 😛

and i did something i vowed i’d never do. i bought mary kate and ashely endorsed products. they were the only cosmetics that currently have a dark blue shimery eye stick. and i got loose eye shadow in this super sparkly beige/gold color, but i think it has the worst packaging ever. it comes in what lip gloss comes in – a mascara type container with a fuzzy stick applicator. ok that’s fine for lip gloss but for loose powder eye shadow it just means that every time you pull the wand out it sprays all over the place. stupids.

what else. david is coming to buffalo wednesday so that means lots of exploring. tons going on tomorrow that i’m not going along for cuz i had to work late tonight. oh well. next week will be enough. plus i think maybe hitting silver creek with dusty next sunday. i was given instructions for getting into bob but i haven’t decided if i want to risk arrest yet or not. i really need to practice climbing fences. i should do that at the terminal lol.

i really need to clean and straighten up and unpack the rest of my shit and hang up pictures considering i’ve been living here for 3.5 months now haha. the ant problem seems to be under control, and i haven’t seen anymore tree crickets inside either. good thing.

i need something to sew so i have an excuse to buy the cute halloween fabrics at walmart. all i can think of is a purse or something, but i looked at patterns at walmart and i’m scared to try anything now that adr isn’t here to help me. and they need fastenings or fusings or something that i don’t know what that means. i found 2 really awesome goth/lolita pattern books from japan on ebay that i really want. the seller claims that tho it’s all in japanese it’s easy to follow the patterns. they’re around 30$ tho…i’m going to have to see if hui zhen knows japanese as well as chinese, or if she can help me with the patterns. she has lots of great chinese pattern books, the clothes are cut so much better than american ones haha. only problem, i only understand like every 3rd word she says hahaha.

i’m super super bored.
