ride for roswell

today i rode my bike 33 miles to raise money for the roswell park cancer institute. i ended up raising $1065, which was totally surprising since i didn’t expect to raise more than a couple hundred. they ended up raising over 3 million this year, from 7000 riders.

leighanne had asked me to do the ride months and months ago, and once it got nice out i started “training”, since i’d never ridden more than 12 miles. going out a couple times a week i finally made it to 33 while i was on vacation at the end of may, then i slacked off only going about 10 miles once or twice a week. but today’s ride was as expected, just over 3 hours. the weather was nerve racking all week, with rain predicted, but it turned out to be mostly nice. and i mean…it sprinkled on my drive to UB, and it sprinkled when i was leaving, but the ride itself was rain free. tons of clouds, which was nice cuz it was only in the mid 60s, and since i left my sunglasses in the car, i was super glad the sun didn’t end up coming out or i would have been very unhappy. however it was quite a bit windy, biking into it for the 2nd half of the ride. could have done without that haha. the 33 mile route went through clarence, sort of rural, then back to UB.

it was fun and challenging and for a good cause. i’d definitely do it again. maybe not the 100 miles that brian did, but i could maybe do 44. as long as it’s not windy haha

aaaannnnd NY state passed the gay marriage bill, so now all my friends can suffer through marriage and the expenses of divorce!! congrats! 🙂

dream

dream: i was a divorcee. i had been married for a short time when i was 18 or 19, but i never moved in with my husband, i stayed living with my parents. it didn’t last long and i filed for divorce. but i didn’t really remember any of it, and i didn’t ever tell anyone about it. i couldn’t remember what he looked like, or his last name, but his first was jerry. the only reason i remembered it and brought it up was because i was out with jerry seinfeld and kramer one day, and kramer asked if i knew a good lawyer, and i said, only the one i used for my divorce. they were both surprised i had been married. once i remembered, i realized i didn’t remember if the divorce was ever final, if we had gotten paper work to sign. so i was trying to remember his name so i could contact him and find out. i was looking through an old address book but there were multiple jerry’s listed in it, so i still wasn’t sure who he was.

life: is very uneventful. i really don’t do anything other than work and sit around at home. tired of winter, waiting for it to get nicer out so i can start biking in preparation for the 33 mile Ride for Roswell (please donate to me). i was going to the gym after work to bike but it’s so freaking boring i couldn’t take doing it for more than a half hour or about 3 miles. plus it was 4am and i didn’t really want to get home later than 5, and i couldn’t sleep well afterward (exercising too close to bed time). warmer weather will also (hopefully) motivate me to get out to urbex more.

but i don’t get much accomplished sitting at home all the time either. no motivation to do anything. i “want” to get a gallery show for my chernobyl photos, but that means i want someone to find me and offer it to me, and not me go seek one out lol. i could be researching galleries and working on an artist statement to apply for a show, but…nope. maybe one of these days.

nice weather will also mean garden time. aiming to plant less than 14 tomato plants this year hahaha.

there, a real (boring) update, not just a dream.

Tell All

Finished reading Tell All by Chuck Palahniuk….I used to call him my favourite author, but when you only like 3 of 10 books by said author, can he really be your favourite? I keep giving him another chance to produce brilliance and it just falls short.

Tell All is about a woman who essentially takes care of an aging movie star. I *think* it takes place in the past…in the golden age of the silver screen. The book is written like a gossip column, with lots of name dropping, text of the names emphasized, and really it’s lots and lots and LOTS of names from the past, most whom I didn’t know. The aging movie star meets a young stud, and the narrator warns her not to “fall” for him because he’s just using her to make a name for himself when she dies. That’s it, mostly.

It’s in 3 acts, and then several chapters in each. Act one could be 2 chapters, but instead is like, 15. It’s extremely boring, repetitive, with no plot. The plot doesn’t kick in until Act 2, with only a little bit of Act 1 intro needed. Then Act 2, which has a plot, is just as repetitive. Act 3 (which I didn’t realize had started), has a minor twist, but one that is not all that shocking or unexpected. Not like the way I was blown away with the twist of Invisible Monsters.

It is not funny, or slightly amusing, or clever. It’s unfortunately not really worth reading. It just annoyed me. I’d recommend passing on it.

possibly the worst book i ever read

One day I was surfing YouTube and some Michael Jackson conspiracy video (possibly how the Illuminati killed him, or how he predicted 9/11) had a link to the web page for this book, “Michael Jackson Backdoor to Neverland: Exposing the King of Pop’s SECRET Mindsets” and I thought “Ok, I’ll bite.” I found the website to be entertaining, and I figured, why not. I was hoping the book would be terribly amusing, but instead it was just terrible.

Where to even begin? I could point out inaccuracies, or pure idiocy on every page. Let’s start with something that I just found irritating. Mr Gautier claims that Michael Jackson was nicknamed “Bambi”…I’ve been a Jackson fan for over half of my life, and do not remember him ever being called Bambi. But that’s ok, maybe I just missed that along the way, no big deal. But Mr Gautier insists on calling Jackson “Bambi”, “The Thriller”, or just “MJ” throughout the book which is not only disrespectful but completely unprofessional.

As for the content, Mr Gautier bases his arguments about Jackson’s “secret mindsets” on single lines from interviews out of context, information from Jackson’s ghost written auto-biography, and questionable books from supposed associates of Jackson. Not only are his theories about Jackson’s mental state completely “out there” with no evidence, and no basis in real psychology, his facts are sometimes COMPLETELY wrong (see also: page 120, writing about the 2005 criminal trial and describing Janet Arvizo’s testimony regarding how she urged her children to lie in a previous lawsuit, suddenly he claims it’s the Chandler family, which is incorrect).

Really, this book is a joke. I find it hard to believe that Mr Gautier has any formal training in psychology, as claimed. He insists that Jackson thought of himself as an orphan, the son of a king, that he WAS a king, that he was suicidal and murderous, and that he hates his family and worked to ruin their careers (all with zero evidence). He claims Jackson bought the ATV music catalog, which includes The Beatles catalog, and others for ego reasons (it couldn’t possibly have been a good business move) and he married Lisa Marie Presley to symbolically “dethrone” the King.

Lines such as “And with his shortened pants, MJ seems to tell us: My body has grown too fast, but my heart is still that of a child! These shortened pants similarly reflect an asexuality common to fairytales, comics or cartoon characters.” make you think to yourself, “seriously??” And it only gets worse, with the author trying to make a comparison between Jackson and Elvis Presley based on the fact that Elvis had a twin who died, and Jackson had a brother with a twin who died, and comparing Jackson to Aleister Crowley.

I would love to get into more of the insane and idiotic things in this book, but it’s making my head hurt and I don’t want to have to read it again to find the choicest paragraphs to speak about. I can only warn you that the book doesn’t even deserve 1 star. It was in no way amusing or entertaining, definitely not enlightening or educational, and while reading it I just kept thinking, “Really? Seriously? How did this even get published?”

Please don’t waste your time on this garbage.

cell phone camera lenses, what?

i was using stumble for firefox one day and got to a site that reviewed a lens for a cell phone camera…!! i had to buy one, it was only $15. it arrived today, and i was super excited to try it out. (test photos are on facebook)

the lens is a wide angle/macro lens, and i was confused how that was going to work when i ordered it. turns out you can unscrew it, and it becomes macro. there is a metal ring that you attach to your phone around the lens, and the other lens magnets onto it. but the review, which was done on an iphone, pointed out that the ring interferes with the flash. they were right, it interferes with my droid1 flash as well. it is a bit awkward to hold against the camera in wide angle mode, strangely a bit easier as macro, but still….it’s weird. so i’ll either have to bite the bullet and interfere with the flash, or rig it some other way (i was thinking some kind of paperclip hook). *update* i put the ring on, and yes it overlaps the flash a tiny bit, but it doesn’t seem to intefere with it much at all. it’s still bright, it still works, it just might not work very good using the lens period because it’s wide and will block the light.

so it’s cool. i’m just excited someone thought to make it, even if it’s not perfect. it is a phone afterall.

the lens came with fabulous Engrish instructions that i will now share

memories of 5 years touring….1 year later

a year ago today was my last nine inch nails show. having met a new nin-friend at work, i’ve been thinking and talking about nin alot lately, and i thought i should get my favourite memories down somewhere. 51 shows later, here’s what i remember…

2000

fragility toronto – i wish i could remember more about this show, but it WAS 10 years ago…it was the most beautiful stage show ever. perfect visuals, great setlist, and i remember trent coming on stage and thinking this was the most beautiful man in the world. black lipstick all over his face and everything 🙂

2005

reno – i invited a virtual stranger to go across the country with me to see our favourite band. and she turned into one of my best friends ever. we had amazing line conversations with awesome people, and “new” guitarist aaron north walked by us with a pizza and we didn’t know who he was. too hyped up to go to bed we drove around reno and got lost in the never ending suburb from hell LOL.

toronto club shows 1 & 2 – still top my list as the best shows i’ve seen. everything about them, from having to get back in line cuz i had the wrong ticket, but still getting to the rail, the crush, the heat, the injuries, being at a 45 degree angle but still not falling down…it was what nin shows should be. only days after With Teeth was released, everyone knew the words, club shows mean true fans in attendance. adrienne2 got hit in the head with a tambourine, and we didn’t see any tambourines again until much later in the year haha

philadelphia club shows 1 & 2 – after the first 2 club shows, we couldn’t NOT go to philly. scalped tickets on ebay, drove to the show. too injured from the week before we rocked out at the soundboard both nights. people stared as we were the only ones who knew the lyrics to “home”. amazing aftershow conversation about why the band ended the set early, to go to see the new star wars (which turned out to be true!), and a 2 hour search for a hotel room (not fun!). and a trent freakout because his guitar stopped working (“something’s gonna get broken!!”)

philly/wilkes-barre – en route after the philly show to wilkes-barre for the next show, we accidentally left bliss at the gas station. good thing we were only driving across the parking lot to the convenience store! adr2 and bliss met cassie and beth, who became line buddies the following spring.

toronto – everyone assumed this was our last show. trent wasn’t known for touring for years anymore. we joked around that we had to go to all the shows we could, because it would be another 5 years before trent put out another album, and by then i’d be 30 and who knows where i’d be (LOL!)…little did we know.

san luis obispo – yes i flew across country, spent more time en route than actually IN california, huge delays in Dallas/Ft Worth because it “snowed”, and missing my connection, greaaaat… but a spur of the moment “club” show, couldn’t miss it. again, assumed it to be my last show.

2006

cincinatti – what else is there to be said about this show except adrienne2 caught aaron’s guitar. 🙂

erie – pilgrimage to Mercer! met sarah for the first time, though we didn’t really know it, and it was the only show i got pulled from the crowd.

rochester – i know that the only people who believe me when i say this are adrienne1, adrienne2, amira, cassie and maybe eric….but…trent played this show TO us. the only show where all of us were at the rail directly in front of trent. the whole show he gave us so much attention, including my one and only “piggy” moment. trent came off the stage directly to me, grabbed my hand and for the rest of the song i had my face smooshed up against his stomach. i was not complaining. “the wretched” was a highlight, and then of course “everyday is exactly the same”, trent came to the edge of the stage and threw the tambourine directly to me. not lying or exaggerating, it was not even a throw, it was a lob, right to me. there was no way anyone else could have even tried to get it, it was that direct to me. adr2 threw me over the rail so i wouldn’t get beat up and the guard looked completely confused as to why i’d want to leave. amazing. top of the list of shows for sure.

las vegas – again, supposed to be my last show.

summer ampitheatres – too hot, too much driving, great setlists. the smallest pit ever in saratoga, and my birthday show in columbus.

2007

flying to europe, sitting in JFK with alex watching “beside you in time” on my laptop. awesome.

london – “year zero” listening party complete with tea and crumpets. getting the first half of The Downward Spiral in order. awesome awesome setlists with songs i never thought i’d hear.

brussels – at my 33rd show i finally met trent reznor. the “spiral line” was invited into the venue for sound check followed by a meet and greet. nervous as hell i managed not to throw up on trent, actually speak to him, and get a hug. i do admit tho i had to go to the bar next door after and do some shots hahaha.

2008

strangely i don’t have alot of memories about the Lights In The Sky tour…

toledo – the show was in a convention center, and all the stage equipment didn’t fit so we got a slightly different show than the others of the tour.

atlantic city – another club show? hell yes. i refunded my ticket to the rescheduled worchester ma show to be able to go to atlantic city, and i had to go by myself but a stripped down small show is always worth it. while we didn’t get anything strange or acoustic like people were expecting, we did get special guest Peter Murphy on “reptile”, and during the course of the show Trent’s security dude stuck a tambourine in my hand for no reason LOL i asked him about it in hamilton, and he said people were fighting for it when trent threw it, so he took it away from them and decided to give it to someone he had seen before.

2009

toronto (again) – a duck ate my muffin. i finally got to see “the fragile” live, which was more than appropriate for ending my nin touring. this was my last show

except it wasn’t – pittsburgh – last minute decision to get lawn seats, which we found out we could upgrade once we got in for $10, score. really, my last show.

except it still wasn’t – trent unhappy with his last shows being during the day light as an opener for jane’s addiction (DUH!!!!!!!) he added a series of “wave goodbye” club shows. i tried to get tickets for NYC, the bowery being a 400 person club, but i had to settle for Chicago. still pretty awesome. invited Sarah to go along with me. she fiiiiiinallly got to see “the wretched” so it was all worth it. super long sets, with special guest Peter Murphy (again) which I could have done without. still pissed off about how badly he screwed up “reptile” since it’s the last time i’ll ever see it. really, seriously, my last 2 shows.

so like some nin fans, i can’t say that he “saved my life” as i was never holding the proverbial gun to my head, but he certainly changed it. i’ve met some of my best friends ever in the queue, i’ve traveled places i never would have, had amazing conversations and had some seriously good times. there is no where else i feel as at home, and as much “myself” as at a show with other people who “get it”. some people think i’m nuts to have gone to so many shows, and sometimes i agree, but in the end there is nothing else i would have rather done.

Dan Lacey, my favourite painter

ok this is too good not to post about. i have a new favourite painter on earth and his name is dan lacey. i really don’t know anything about him, his site is kinda confusing, he apparently paints pictures of people with pancakes on their head…but check this shit out…

dear god. that is so…there are no words, but i almost need it. it is a shame that dan lacey does not sell prints. then on his site, i find a whole page full of MJ paintings, including…

holy.fucking.shit.

see the rest at: http://www.faithmouse.com/art_of_michael_jackson_artwork.html there is a nice one of MJ with tupac. in his blog he promises a new MJ portrait, of him holding an oil covered pelican! i can’t wait!

and then there is a whole page of paintings of obama riding unicorns ROFL. my personal favourite is obama riding a unicorn which is stabbing a…bull? buffalo? that sarah palin is riding LOL. omg. so much brilliance i can hardly breathe. and the one with obama, stalin and…house? lol!

and you probably think this post is full of sarcasm, but i am totally serious, this guy is my new hero.

OH WAIT HE DOES SELL PRINTS! i’m in trouble now, how do i choose which to get?!?!

a special thanks to leighanne for directing me to regretsy.com, where i discovered the jacko and jesus painting. i don’t know what i did without knowing this artist LOL

last minute addition….definitely need

365 days of 30

i decided to start a 365 photo project, for my 31st year of living. so far i’ve made it a week. woo!! i decided not to cross post them here, they are at flickr, and cross posted to facebook. but here is the link if anyone would like to follow or check in from time to time:

http://www.flickr.com/photos/fragilemidnight/sets/72157624388803294/

my main concerns about the project
1. it’ll be so completely boring
2. i know i won’t keep up with it if i use a “real” camera, so unfortunately the quality is going to suffer by using my motorola droid phone camera. tho i do have photoshop on my phone haha…
3. when i force myself to be creative i fail, so…back to point #1

we’ll see if i can go the whole year

earthquake!!

i have a picture frame on top of my cable box that makes a funny noise when people (or kitty) walk near it, cuz it’s not entirely stable.

i was sitting on the couch and the frame started making that noise, which was weird because kitty was with me, no one else is here to make vibrations. it was a bit disconcerting, and i had the thought that my cable box was about to blow up.

then the couch started shaking, and the pictures on my wall next to me, and the water in my glass was moving. earthquake.

my best guess was the picture was making noise for at least a minute before i was able to feel the shaking, and i could feel it for at least a minute. the shaking definitely lessened, i could still feel it, and the water was still moving for a bit after that.

it’s such a creepy feeling, and this was really nothing. i can’t imagine what it must be like to be in a “real” earthquake. the USGS website is reporting 5.5 magnitude near the ontario-quebec border. it reminds me of the quake i felt as a kid that was centered near montreal, and the one when i was home from college that woke me up (my bed started swaying, but my parents who were already up didn’t feel it), also centered in quebec i believe.

the michael jackson conspiracy

a few weeks ago Laura mentioned that the Discovery ID channel has a show called True Crime with Aphrodite Jones which was doing an episode on the Michael Jackson trial. She is a true crime author and reporter who covered the trial for Fox News (i think – don’t hold that against her haha). the show was a 1 hour overview of all the problems that the DA’s case against him had, and went through the evidence (or “evidence”) and how the aquittal came about. Laura mentioned that she had the book Aphrodite Jones had written called Michael Jackson Conspiracy and she let me borrow it.

The book is based upon all of the trial transcripts and officially submitted evidence. Jones wrote the book because once the trial was over she realized that the media’s coverage of the entire trial was completely biased to the prosecution, and that the media had already convicted MJ and only reported things that would make people believe he had done the crimes. They ignored, or glossed over all of the many many holes in the prosecution’s case, as well as testimony from defense witnesses that supported MJ. So the book goes through the entire trial, all the major witnesses, and does a really good job at showing that MJ was innocent.

The Arvizo family who made the accusations are/were nutcases, and that is really really clear in the transcripts of their testimony. Especially the mother. It is pretty obvious they were targeting various celebrities to give them money and “stuff” by using Gavin’s cancer to make people feel bad for them. It wasn’t just MJ….MJ was just the most naive, and most easily taken advantage of. And of course, there is the seed that was planted in 1993 that he was a child molester which makes it that much easier to target him.

Now when I became a fan in 95 and learned about the 93 allegations, I decided they weren’t true. Having read the GQ article “Was Michael Jackson Framed?” http://www.buttonmonkey.com/misc/maryfischer.html it’s pretty clear that the Chandler family (or maybe just Evan, do not RIP) was pretty shady and out to extort money from MJ. Well they succeeded and MJ was branded as a pedophile despite the fact that a settlement does not imply guilt (in fact, in Jones book, his defense attorney thinks the reason for the settlement was that MJs handlers thought that $20 million was a drop in the bucket compared to what MJ would earn through tours and merchandise if he wasn’t involved in a trial…and thus money THEY would be making as well). Having one family succesfully extort money from MJ, and MJ’s continued preference to spend time with children and help those in need…the door was left open for other opportunists to show up. And that’s what the Arvizos did.

I’m not sure that their initial intention was to bilk him of millions through a settlement…or that they even planned ahead to accuse him of molestation, but it is totally clear that they were using him and other celebrities (George Lopez, Jay Leno and Chris Tucker testified about the family in the trial). MJ made it convenient for people to take advantage of him.

The book was very interesting, and included some things that were a bit surprising to me.
1. MJ was a porn freak. LOL this is not something I ever expected to hear about him, as to me, I never thought he was gay, I just thought he was asexual. He could dance sexily on stage and in videos, but in real life it just didn’t seem to me that he was that interested in any one, men or women. But apparenly he had quite the collection of porn mags kept in briefcases in the back of his closet. I guess he had a thing for playboy and hustler LOL. Well good for him, makes him seem like a normal dude. Now if only he had some Girls Gone Wild dvds in his collection….
2. MJ drank alot of alcohol. Again, this is not something I expected to hear because he always said that he didn’t drink or do drugs (well I guess we know now he was a bit of a drug addict). In trying to make the case that MJ was giving alcohol to kids, it came out that he drank on flights, he drank in his room, he drank with guests…he drank. Wine, vodka, tequila, jack daniels…The DA wasn’t able to prove that MJ ever gave the Arvizo kids alcohol, and in fact witnesses stated that the kids had broken into MJ’s wine cellar on their own.

Something not quite as surprising, as I always suspected it…MJ seemed to not have a clue what people around him were doing. The DA tried to make the case that MJ held the Arvizos hostage, or conspired to…which…even without knowing anything about the trial and evidence always seemed preposterous. The book makes it clear the charge was pretty much entirely made up by Janet Arvizo. But in the testimony, witnesses talked about MJs handlers, and how it seemed that they did whatever they wanted, were greedy, and MJ didn’t know what was going on. It always kinda seemed like that to me, because the last 15 years were filled with alot of seemingly bad ideas.

Since the book used the court transcripts and official evidence, it’s pretty clear why the jury acquitted MJ of all charges. The DA just wasn’t able to prove anything, and the things that they considered to be “smoking guns”, Tom Meserau (MJ’s lead lawyer) poked full of holes. The media made it seem like it was an open and shut case, and that he was guilty, but in reality it was not even close.

Once again I am convinced of MJ’s innocence. I do have to admit when the accusations were made for a 2nd time, I had to give pause to really think if he was capable of it. But it’s clear that both the Chandlers and Arvizos were looking for cash. MJ made it easy for them to try to get it.

I have to wonder though…if he had been conviced and gone to jail, would he still be alive? Would it matter if he was alive, but in jail? I suppose not, since even when he got out, I doubt anyone would have supported him or his career after that. I always thought he’d die in jail if he had gone, or comitted suicide, but maybe he was stronger than we all think. Or if this accusation and trial had never happened, would he have had so many problems that led to his insomnia and Conrad Murray and the propofol. What if the 93 allegations had never happened, would he have continued to be the massive superstar he was in the 80s and early 90s, or would his career have dropped off for some other reason. I would really love to hear from Jordie Chandler, as he would not cooperate with the 05 trial in any way…Clear MJ’s name, from the horses mouth, because the general public is never going to read this book, and never going to know the truth.
