snuff

i dreamed ed norton had a sex change, that went wrong, and he was more like a hermaphrodite. w.t.f.

i finished reading “snuff”. it wasn’t as bad as i expected it to be. i wouldn’t say it is up to the standards of chuck’s first 3 books, but it wasn’t horrible. i liked it, but it wasn’t mind blowing. a bit of a twist at the end that i had sorta figured out already, and a twist that i thought was about to happen but didn’t. and i’m not sure i totally understand the ending, or at least the emotional meaning of the ending so i may have to read it again.

snuff out harry potter

stef forgot to bring me more harry potter yesterday, so i gave in and bought the new chucky p book “snuff” (the real title ha). i read a random middle chapter at the store, and i still don’t expect to be blown away by it. it really does seem like more of the same, and that it almost has a “haunted” like feel – short stories wrapped in an over arching framework. we shall see. i need to finish “the bell jar” first.

bites

bbq tonight at brian and danielles. i stayed way longer than i wanted to, but oh well. i got bit by something wicked right above my eyebrow. it itched like crazy and felt swollen but i kept asking everyone if it was puffy and they said no. well they must have been smoking some amazing pot cuz i have this GIANT lump on my forehead now. i mean, biggest lump i’ve ever seen that wasn’t a tumor hahah. if i had a few more, and they were smaller i’d look like the lizard guy who had those bump implants put in along his eyebrows. now i reek of smoke and bug spray and my eyes are burning from the fire.

and my house smells again and i don’t know why. everything that could smell, ie cat box, is clean. i’m still convinced something is dead in the walls.

harry fn potter

so…i started reading harry potter. a few years too late but i’m really out of things to read, and i figured a big series will get me through summer. so i finished the first one a few weeks ago. i’m borrowing them from a coworker, and now that we can’t have books on the gaming floor it’s been harder to swap and get the next ones.

so in the meantime i read “i am legend”, which was only half of the book. the 2nd half of the book was all short stories that seem to have nothing to do with i am legend. i read the first 3, all creepy and supernatural but i wasn’t that interested. when ian was up last week and said he wanted to read it i gave it to him.

i also just finished the golden compass which i really enjoyed. more than narnia. and i have more of an interest in seeing the movie adaptation than i am of seeing the narnia movies. the 2 follow ups are on my bookmooch list but no one is giving so it’ll be a while before i read the others.

chucky p’s new book comes out this week (or maybe last week) but i’m not too interested in it. it’s called “smut” or something, and is about some porn star trying to break the world record of number of partners in a day. so you know, the usual chucky p book. and i’ve just grown tired of every book having the same theme. so i’ll wait to mooch it, or paperback, or whatever.

gas sucks.

in the last 4 hours gas at the Tops Market down the street went up 7 cents. WHAT THE FUCK! i guess those 10 billion dollars in profits just weren’t enough. seriously, what are poor people doing? because i remember back in the day, my poor ex boyfriend’s family would put $5 in gas in the car until they got more money, but that would get you 5 gallons. now you barely get one!

also spicy sweet chili doritos are gross. i bought them trying to find a good sweet chili chip that compares with the ones from mark and spencer in london last year and i have yet to find any. i forgot that doritos still covers the chips in nacho cheese despite the additional flavors, and that is nasty. but i keep eating them because i spent 3$ on the bag.

tix

got my mohegan tickets…all seats, boo. section 2 (which is center), row m. i expect this is much like vegas where alot/all the best seats are reserved for player comps. i wish i knew the CT players at work better so I could ask them to get me tix, but alas i’d feel very very weird about that, and i don’t know of any of our local regulars going to mohegan to play…ah well. with seats that means no line up and plenty of time to explore norwich.

rolling stone gave “the slip’ 4 stars….wow. maybe it’s only me thinking it’s not that great…there is a quote i liked in the review “Reznor came of age during the alt-rock explosion of the 1990s, and his innovation was to give that musical movement’s rampant angst — the dread and daddy issues that the grunge rockers were always moaning about — a high-tech makeover. He turned Gen X self-pity into the computer blues.”….computer blues ha. i like that.

someone explain to me why yahoo rejecting microsoft’s buyout bid was a horrible “irrational” decision. maybe they don’t want to sell their company to an evil monopoly who will go and make their product completely suck. google offered to buy craigslist and they said no, same reason. craigslist works fine as is, it doesn’t need to be changed, and that’s what any major company would do if they took over…make it look pretty but nonfunctional etc etc etc. i say hooray for yahoo not letting microsoft take over.

the thursday in the square line up was announced. the only one i would have possibly went to see was candlebox, but i’ll be away seeing NIN.

i may have found a house… sold last night before my offer went in

nin tix

got tickets to nin worcester…SO EASY this time. took under 2 minutes, and that included the capcha image not showing up right away. i don’t get it, but whatever. next wed is mohegan sun, and then we’re done.

for what it’s worth i’ve found IE works better with musictoday’s servers than firefox. for future reference ha.

hip still hurts, but less, and i can stand up out of a chair without almost falling over and walk without limping. so off to the grocery store.

Gunman on the 190!

so of course, the talk of the town was the gunman on the 190. i was supposed to deal roulette in the hotel, and got moved to high limit. i was never so happy to get moved to baccarat ever, cuz that meant i got to watch the standoff until the end.

here’s one with channel 4 commentary: http://youtube.com/watch?v=V3m5Ncv5mIE

the whole thing started around 6pm and ended about quarter to 9. the coverage was amusing, all the speculation and stupid questions (like “what is on the truck’s hood next to the waterbottle?”), but i guess when you have 3 hours of live air time to fill you need to talk about something.

it turns out that my friend carlo happened to be on the 190 when it started, and was the 3rd car stopped by police after they had stopped the guy. he thought it must be an accident and looked over a few lanes and actually saw the guy standing there with the gun. he looked at the cop and was like “wtf aren’t you going to get me out of here?!” after about 15 minutes the cops managed to get carlo and a few other cars away. crazy.

buffalo news article:
A 66-year-old Vietnam Veteran formerly from Western New York was captured Monday evening by State Police and a Buffalo police SWAT team after a nearly three-hour standoff on the southbound Niagara Section of the Thruway in front of hundreds of spectators in Riverside.

The incident began shortly before 6 p.m., when Hernando, Fla. resident James Gilchriese and his 50-year-old girlfriend, Patricia S. Meckley of Homosassa, Fla., were spotted by passing motorists in an apparent physical domestic dispute while traveling south on the Interstate 190.

A state trooper pulled over the couple’s silver-tan pick-up truck just north of the near the Ontario Street exit.

“Upon stopping the vehicle, the trooper noticed the male subject in the vehicle brandishing a handgun,” said State Police Capt. Michael Nigrelli.

Meckley fled the truck. At that point, Gilchriese threatened suicide and put the loaded gun to his head.

The incident snarled rush-hour traffic for miles after troopers and Buffalo police shut down the Thruway from Porter Avenue to the Youngmann Expressway.

The standoff drew a mass of onlookers who lined Niagara Street and a large grassy area nearby to catch a glimpse of Gilchriese, who was dressed in shorts and a General Motors jacket, and often walked around the outside of his truck. In one hand, he talked with hostage negotiators on his cell phone while the other hand held a gun to his head.

“It was a tense stand-off many times,” Nigrelli said.

After a few hours of “up and down” negotiations, police made their move at 8:47 p.m.

According to Nigrelli: “As we were approaching darkness, we were losing the battle here because the tactical edge goes to the subject.”

SWAT members swiftly approached the pick-up truck, where Gilchriese was then sitting. A bright flash and loud bang ripped through the twilight air as police pulled Gilchriese from the vehicle and placed him on the ground. He was then taken by ambulance to Erie County Medical Center with minor injuries, authorities said.

Gilchriese will undergo a psychiatric examination at ECMC before facing criminal charges. Those charges were still being determined by State Police late Monday.

“We inconvenienced traffic on the northbound of the I-190 and the southbound of the I-190 for a few hours,” Nigrelli said. “It’s a small price to pay to save someone’s life.”

Gunman!!

Sarah called to warn me there is a police stand off with a gunman on the 190, in case i took that way to work. i don’t, but i appreciated the warning and passed it along to my south buffalo friends. turned on the news, and it’s like something from LA or truTV’s most dangerous police videos hehehe. we don’t get crazy car chases and standoffs with armed men in buffalo. drama! the news is showing all the riverside neighborhood people hanging out watching along the highway…yeah cuz that’s safe! he’s got a gun, bullets travel far retards! the police are now ticketing and towing everyone who parked on the neighborhood roads to watch the standoff haha. i want to watch but i must leave for work…*sigh*
