We only had tickets to the metallica show for, oh, 7 months, and it finally arrived. eric had gotten us floor seats, justifying it with “well it won’t be any worse than other pits we’ve been in”, and in the end it was the most ridiculous GA crowd i’ve ever been in. no it wasn’t rough, there was NO ONE AROUND US…the metallica stage is truly 360 (unlike u2), at center ice, with the crowd fully surrounding the set up. we had been hanging out in the parking lot since 3:15 but didn’t get in any lines until we saw them open the doors inside. we joined into a line which went super fast, and when we got in we could still get rail. that was a surprise to say the least. they really utilize their entire stage, with mics set up for james hetfield all around the stage, so no matter where you stood you were never really “in front” or “in back”. lars drum kit rotated, and the other 3 wandered around all night. but for some reason everyone clumped together in the traditional front and back of the stage. we were toward the side, hanging around with plenty of space. i actually left during the 2 openers to hang out with frank and jenn in the concourse, and when i went back after lamb of god finished i expected to have to fight to get back to eric and his friends – nope. walked right up, STILL. i was amazed. surely the floor would fill in by the time metallica started. nope. had so much room i could have danced like a freak all night and never touched anyone. ridiculous.

so as i said, i left during the openers so i have no comment. they were volbeat and lamb of god.

i am not familiar with a big chunk of metallica’s catalog, so this really was a show where i had absolutely no expectations. i could care less what they played cuz most i don’t know, and could just appreciate it as a sort of outsider. from beginning to end they were really together and on fire, and even tho i hate lars, he didn’t do a bad job hehe. they had pyro as expected (and no one started on fire! ha), which you could definitely feel the heat of on the floor. my only disappointment, if i could have one, was when they came out for the encore they started playing “bleeding me” (eric thinks it was “outlaw torn”) which is one of my favs from “load”, and for whatever reason lars stopped them all. they look confused about it too, but whatever. would have liked to hear that one (or “outlaw torn”, if eric is right, that one is great too).

they stayed on stage quite long after “seek and destroy”, throwing out TONS of picks, and drum sticks (which lars wasted, by trying to lamely throw them into a bullseye sign someone had made, and kept missing). it was funny to walk out of the place watching people struggle to deflate the giant black metallica balls that came down from the roof during the last song. i walked out empty handed but that was fine with me, i’d rather have a true fan get souvenirs.

so it was a pretty good show. having hair to headbang with was sorta fun haha. would i pay so much to see them again, i’m not sure. i’m getting old and cheap haha.

oh and btw…my hot water tank exploded sometime between 6:30am and 2:30pm on monday. woke up and went to go to the basement as usual and the carpet was all wet. shit. so after a waterless day, a plumber came around 9pm to look at it, turned the water back on then came at 8am tues morning to replace it. so we’re back in business $1200 later.

cassie and i had a “We’re Old” moment at u2…on thursday we were in line with 2 young girls who were skipping school to queue all day. i couldn’t tell if they were high school or young university students. possibly high school because she said they went to such and such academy, which sounds more high school than college. we were talking about the show the night before and i had said they didn’t play alot of really old stuff, besides “the unforgettable fire” and “sunday bloody sunday”, to which the one girl replied “oh no they didn’t play beautiful day?”…..

*sigh* 2000 was considered “old u2” to these girls…

U2 toronto, September 16&17

u2 in toronto sept 16 and 17

things didn’t really go as planned, as kate had to cancel because she couldn’t find her passport, and leighanne had to cancel because at the last minute her work wouldn’t give her her time off 🙁 so it ended up just being me and cassie heading up to toronto for the 2 shows. because of traffic we didn’t end up getting to the rogers centre until just after 10am, and were 272 in line. not too bad. we were aiming to get inside the circle, towards the back center and the story was that 2500 people can fit inside so it didn’t look like a problem. hung out at the venue the whole day with walks back and forth to the hotel. got let in around 5:30 and ended up basically where we wanted to be on the inside of the stage. snow patrol went on at quarter after 7, and they weren’t bad. i didn’t know them, so i was expecting whiney emo stuff, and it wasn’t so that was good 🙂 i wouldn’t listen to them on my own, but they were better than the openers in 05.

u2 went on just before 9, with bowie’s “space oddity” as the intro song. yay bowie. u2 came out opening with “breathe” which was very good. the crowd however, sucked ass. they were completely not into the show, not cheering or singing or moving or anything. wth. it was bizarre and crappy. once again, for reasons i can’t comprehend, u2 starts their show with the majority of their new material. it all sounded great, but why not space it out? whatev. “magnificent” was a little disappointing, it lacked the epicness that i was expecting, and i think i figure out that it was because larry’s drums weren’t loud enough. it has such a driving beat that needed to be brought out more. the “i’ll go crazy…” remix was a bit reggae and fun, and it made the song tolerable as long as you pay no attention to the crappy motivational speaker lyrics 🙂 “moment of surrender”, the closer, is still crap. bono’s vocals sound painful. but edge and adam sounded good. it was nice to hear “stay” again as i had only heard it at my very first show in 2001. “until the end of the world” and “ultraviolet” were awesome, as is anything from achtung baby hehe. bono hit himself in the face with the mic during “one” i think, when he went to say something to the crowd haha. “unforgettable fire” was pretty great, especially with the way their light screens move down forming a big red cone above the band. all in all, it was a good show. the crowd still seemed pretty crappy through out. part of me wondered if it just sounded quiet because it was outside with the dome open, as opposed to in an arena where the crowd noise would be echoing around. but then the 2nd night the crowd was way louder, so it must not have been the open dome.

the next day was more of the same, getting in line earlier than the day before but being almost 100 back from where we were the day before. but once again it wasn’t a bad spot. we aimed for outside stage rail, edge side, and got it. it was a much better vantage point, as i am spoiled with always being on the rail and being able to see. i didn’t like having to look around heads to see the stage the night before, and this position meant no one in front of us. woo. 2nd night got some set list changes including “mysterious ways” which is a rarity on this tour. bono also did something he hadn’t done yet this tour, and brought someone on stage…he pulled a little kid, maybe 9 years old, up out of the inner crowd onto one of the moving bridges. it was a bit scary cuz i was sure he’d drop he kid or separate the kid’s shoulder haha. but the kid made it up on the bridge in time for “city of blinding lights”, ran around the catwalk with bono, got to wear bono’s glasses, and had bono sing to him. how awesome! what a great story to tell at school the next day. there are high rise apartment buildings around rogers center, and at one point bono was talking and called out to the buildings, asking anyone who was watching the show from the top floors to flash their lights, and a few apartments did hahahaha. edge’s mic stoped working at one point, and while they fixed it bono gave a speech about all the celebrities he had run into around town while doing his laundry, and other places, and closed it with “then i went back to my hotel and megan fox was there” hahahaha. everyone got a kick out of that one. anyway, another good show with a much better crowd.

i’m not sure how i feel about stadium shows. you could hear a pretty bad echo during quieter songs like “one” and “with or without you”, but over all the acoustics were decent. but arenas and their echoes sorta give a richness to the sound that i actually like. it was great to see a show in such a big place, but small is better. the claw stage set up looked very cool in the shadow of the cn tower, and under the open dome. it really was massive and scary looking haha. i had fun, that’s all that matters.

NIN Chicago – waving goodbye

i swear my 2nd to last nin show ever….

sarah and i got to the venue around noon, finding it with no problem because it really was right next to the red line. made friends with the people around us in line, none of whom were actually from chicago. it was unreal how many people were from out of town. the venue was an old theatre/ballroom that had a pretty excellent decor – super gaudy castle looking. it was awesome.

mew opened. i guess they are from denmark. the music was sometimes alright but the vocals were not. overall not the worst opener trent has had, but i’d never listen to them.

nin…rail on the far right side, didn’t get touched the whole time, and had a nice view. they had a crew video taping the show. opened with pinion into wish into last. woo! once again during wish it hit me how awesome and powerful it is and how much i am going to miss that. it was great to hear last (at least) one more time, this time with robin playing. at this point i realized that david, who was in the mezzanine, was seeing a completely different band from the one he saw when we were in europe and that amused me haha. i can’t remember what was really played, the only nin song i hadn’t seen before was lights in the sky. they also played Saul Williams’ “banged and blown through”, which was really cool. then later in the set peter murphy made an apperance and from one of the balcony boxes sang a song i didn’t know which was apparently joy division. he then came down on stage for dead souls followed by one of peter’s songs. sometimes i enjoy peter sometimes not. i don’t really like hearing him sing nin songs, but the other songs are fine and fun. he looked awful though, too much makeup made him look like a clown. i was thankful that he didn’t sing reptile, because i’d rather not have my last time seeing reptile be with him singing it. we got full version of la mer, and the downward spiral was so kick ass again. it almost scared me when it kicked in. i did not cry at the fragile, but it kills me that trent has to collect himself before that song. long set with no encore, closed with hurt. blah. haha

last nin show ever…

i was in the exact same spot as friday lol. this show had more assholes in the crowd but it still wasn’t bad by me until the calm person next to me left the rail and this psycho jumper filled the spot. thankfully it was for only 5 songs or so. this time they opened with home, and played a completely different set. we got ruiner, which…holy crap robin!! robin is amazing. got metal, i’m afraid of americans, i do not want this, and the way out is through like the JA tour. peter murphy joined the band yet again, and destroyed reptile. that’s destroyed in a bad way. he started singing too soon, sang the same line twice, couldn’t hear him other parts, the whole thing was full of suck i couldn’t even get into the music which is a shame. when trent returns in 5 years he needs to stop playing reptile in chicago cuz it always sucks. the worst version of reptile ever was chicago oct 05, and this one was 2nd worse. peter murphy also sang a bauhaus song i didn’t know which went into bela lugosi’s dead, which at some point included trent playing a see through red recorder haha. and then they did final solution. (an aside there are constantly police/ambulance sirens going off in chicago). another long set, and closed with hurt again. i really didn’t want my last song to see to be hurt, but oh well. ppl seem to like that one 😛

i’m sadly not really in the mood to review the show. that’s all i can think of to say. too preoccupied with being pissed off at airlines charging me to get home early for mike’s wake. i don’t care if my ticket was purchased on priceline and has a non refundable policy, there should be some fucking exceptions.

i did enjoy both shows tho, despite STILL not seeing “physical”, it really was my last realistic request. trent seemed really happy, and at the 2nd show he stated they were not quitting making music, that all of them combined and on their own would have more projects that he’d keep everyone updated on, and to not kill ourselves yet hahahahah. oddly in a way, i think the song i’m going to miss the most is “wish”. it is just soooo powerful live, such a great feeling. *sigh* thank you trent. it’s been a great ride.

*edit* i don’t remember “gone, still” in either set hahah

Julien-K Buffalo 6-27-09

saturday was the day of 29797 things to do. work didn’t give me friday off so i could be in toronto in the morning for Carolyn’s wedding so I had to miss that. and they wouldn’t give me saturday off for the terminal’s 80th and for julien k, so i had to call in.

so started the afternoon at the terminal, the party started at 5. hung out manning the new gift shop til i had to leave at 6:30 to adr2’s so we could go to town ballroom for julien-k and combichrist. 4 bands played…first was…displaced? i don’t know, something with a D and they were memorably not good. 2nd was aestetic perfection, who weren’t too bad. julien-k was 3rd, and that’s who i was there to see. last time they were in buffalo, they were supposed to play with black light burns 2 years ago but ryan got sick and they cancelled. so this was a long time coming, and given that i really really love the cd (death to analog) i was excited. i hadn’t seen my orgy boys in a long time, and they make me happy haha. i’d say they were decently entertaining. it is weird to see ryan shuck as a front man, and it seems he’s not quite used to it either. he’s got a surprisingly good voice, i was surprised (on the cd too). he channels jay gordon at times, and other times i was reminded of trevor hurst haha. amir was amir, still cool and calm and perfect on stage. i was satisfied with their set. in no particular order i think they played: death to analog, someday soon, kick the bass, technical difficulties, systeme de sexe, nvr say nvr, look at u, futura. i don’t have anything to say about combichrist because i don’t know their material at all. we saw them open for kmfdm, and they were good, so…yep.

before combichrist went on, they played thriller and surprisingly everyone started cheering, and were dancing around. then during their set, they were asking for cheers for the other 3 bands, and then named “michael jackson” and the whole crowd erupted, loudest they were all night. seriously surprising, an industrial show with people appreciating mj…

before julien-k came on, we were sitting on the floor on the 2nd level and i looked over at the boots this girl was wearing next to me, and there was a random julien-k guitar pick on the floor. yoink! and later some girl came up to me and said her friend wanted to come give me a hug..um ok. so yeah this random guy came over and gave me a hug. later during JK’s set, he walked by on the lower level and grabbed my hand LOL. then i made another friend in line for the bathroom, this girl who would not stop talking to me, and i was like pleaaaase someone get out of a stall so i can get away from this girl! thankfully i didn’t see her the rest of the night. but i did run into danielle, which was weird, considering she’s you know…living in boston lol. she came home specially to see JK and amir recognized her (she’s the rough cutt girl dontyaknow) and gave her his guitar slide.

after, went back to adr2’s and they had made me a birthday cake and we watched Repo the Genetic Opera. i had really wanted to see it tho it looked bad. it was supposedly a rock opera, and it has an interesting concept story line. but…it was not good. it was pretty, but the music, which is sorta key to a rock opera/musical, was unexpectedly bad. and not even bad in a good way. it was just bad. 🙁

NKOTB!!!

tonight was new kids on the block with jenn. 19 years later i finally get to see them and it was still super fun, and nice good old pop show. they performed for 2 hours, lots of new stuff that i didn’t know, and pretty much every old song that was at all popular. jordan did a reworked version of his solo hit “give it to you” (super hot) and joe did one of his solo songs as well. and joe doesn’t have tourettes when he is onstage 🙂 they still sound great (better than i remember them sounding live back in the day actually), and they dance and everything. openers were the dance crew jabawokees (sp), who were really good (makes me want to see MJ again), and jessie mccartney (young pop singer, i recognized one of the songs) who reminded me of Cory Heart (sunglasses at night) for some reason, maybe the 80s jacket. ran into mary and her sister, and some girls from work.

NIN Pittsburgh 09

my last nin show. no seriously it really really is. the last nin show in the US is tomorrow in NC and there’s no way I can make that.

adr2 bliss and i left for pittsburgh around 10:30, stopped at a mall in erie to get bliss some boots cuz she forgot hers (we all forgot a ton of stuff it seemed haha), and made it to bliss’s house to get her sister. adr2 and i stopped at a whole foods to get something to eat quick, back to get the girls, and off to the venue. we had lawn tickets and were paranoid about it raining (it was forecast to storm all day). while i was walking the line looking for sarah and jory, i ended up at the front not finding them (nin presale was already inside) and i asked a guard what the difference was between the 3 lines that were formed, and he said nothing, you can start another one right here. so i got the girls, and went back and started a brand new line. we got dirty looks, and it’s like, woah chill we have freaking LAWN tickets idiots. and you too could have started a new line…oddly, no one else followed us into this new line.

when doors finally opened, and we were one of the first in, i noticed a table set up next to a merch booth that was offering ticket upgrades (first come first serve). i went over and asked, for $10 each you could upgrade from lawn to a seating section, and they had various ones to choose from. we said, hell yes, and got 4 tickets together in section 6 row h, which turned out to be the equivalent of the front of the 200 section at most ampitheatres. we ended up behind the “box” seats, pretty much half way between the stage and the lawn where we would have been, and almost center. sweet!! quite an upgrade.

i counted this time, and street sweeper social club said their name, or that they were not a band but a social club, 21 times. TWENTY ONE, and they played a half hour. ridiculous.

the crowd filled in once nin came on, and opened with “home”…sort of a weird opener, but it was good. i’m glad i went, purely because we got to hear “somewhat damaged” one more time 🙂 sweet. that song is so powerful live. a few changes from the toronto set, but the middle set “rare” stuff was mostly the same. sadly we didn’t get “last” or “physical” because they did a single song (hurt) encore again. suck. as the instrumental, we got “the downward spiral” which was surprisingly kickass. the loud part was totally loud, and it just hit you with this wall of sound, it was pretty awesome. it was unexpected, because i really don’t think much about that song. when he introduced “the fragile” trent said, “pretend it’s dark out, this song works better in the dark”. and he paused and said he needed to get his head together. it was cute, and sad (to me, because of my relationship with that song). i said i wouldn’t cry again, and i didn’t, but that almost got me before the song even started lol.

jane’s was boring to me again. i sat through it, and the seat next to me was filled by this hippy kid. he bought me a beer for holding his seat for him…i told him i didn’t want it but he bought it anyway, and those things were expensive so i felt forced to drink some of it lol. later on he asked me why i wasn’t rockin out, and i said i didn’t like jane’s, he replied with oh you were here for nine inch nails, they’re like, heavy maaaaaan. LOL then some other guy who wasn’t sitting near us, asked me if i worked at children’s hospital…um no i live in buffalo, and he just stared at me and was like, oh you look like someone i know who works at children’s hospital. really? i’d never have guessed that.

and thank god we upgraded our tickets, because it pooooured during jane’s, and we would have been soaked and miserable.

now i didn’t get all emotional like some people *wink* that this was the last show, and it was all ending. but it did hit me during “Terrible Lie” that i was really really going to miss it. when i start having bad angsty shit happen in life, i’ll really really really miss it and be depressed. let’s just hope my life continues drama free. trent won’t be gone forever. i guess he recently said there will be new nin records in the next few years, just no tours. i am happy with nin records. we used to wait 5 years between albums/tours. i don’t expect him to stay “retired” more than 5 years. whether he comes out as nin or as himself or as something else, it is still trent reznor, and in the end, that’s why we were all here.

NIN Toronto 09

nin toronto, my last pit show, possibly ever (silly trent “retiring”)

drove up to molson ampitheatre with sarah, and with adr2 and bliss on our heels on the highway. the nin.com line wasn’t very long and we picked our seat along the water just like last time. the only notable happening of the queue were the geese/ducks/birds…a friendly little girl duck decided to play homeless person and go up and down the line begging for food. i happened to be eating a muffin so i threw a few crumbs. it wasn’t afraid of people because it stood there right in front of me waiting for more. then it decided to just take more itself and ended up pulling the whole muffin right out of my hand hahaha. duck stole my muffin!!

once inside, one back from rail slightly left of center. now that there are only 4 members in nin the stage set up is a bit different and “trent’s junk” ended up being right in front of us. not bad! i didn’t really want to be up front because i had a headache and didn’t want to deal with it but sure glad adr2 and bliss talked me into it. killer setlist. the surprises were ruined for me once again thanks to the photo blog, but no matter. they had been changing the sets enough that you still couldn’t tell what you’d get. there were really 2 songs that i wanted, and if i didn’t get, i’d be mad. and it turned out pretty good…”metal”, “i’m afraid of americans”, “the becoming”, “i do not want this” and really my ultimate, “the fragile”…the song that basically started it all 10 years ago, fitting that i finally see it at my last pit show. and i am lame and i started to cry. the one song i wanted and didn’t get was “physical”. they had been doing it in the encore, but for some reason instead of a 3 song encore it was just one, and of course, it was “hurt”…just my luck! 😛 and oh yeah, trent tripped and fell on the stage carpeting during survivalism (pretty sure), but kept singing, and then was SUPER PISSED OFF and screamed at his tech (wasn’t his fault trent was clumsy haha) anger carried into mr self destruct and he knocked all his shit over haha.

i will find the full setlist once the cable comes back on (it has gone out once again, jerks)

and oh yeah, street sweeper social club, aka tom morello’s new band. i didn’t think it was bad, it just sounded like rage and audioslave, because that’s the sound of tom morello. i’d say they were better than alot of other nin openers, but i wouldn’t seek them out ever. then after nin was jane’s addiction. and holy wow it was not at all what i expected. i left the front and hung out in the very back of the pit. i had no idea that they were a chill mellow stoner band. i really thought it was all going to be up beat and rocking like “been caught stealing” (one of three JA songs i know ha). sadly i was really bored, and actually glad they were “headlining” because if i had to sit through that in order to get to nin, that would have been tough.

so i keep saying “last pit show” instead of just last show, cuz as i posted right before this, i am going to pittsburgh afterall. i need to hear “physical” and if they don’t play it there i’m gonna punch someone. i’d like to hear “last” one more time as well. i don’t really have any more requests though. i think pittsburgh will make it 48 shows including fragility, and i’ve pretty much heard all i could want to hear by now.

it’s been a great 5 years.

*edit* i forgot to mention the girl who showed up to talk to the skivy security guard holding a bunch of plush monkey backpacks, with scary “trent” faces on them. they had to have been trent faces, but they were horrible hideous and frightening. security called someone who came and gave her and her friends wristbands. wtf. i so expected a photo of them to show up on the photoblog if they ended up getting into the nin camp, but no luck.

concert schedule

thankfully u2 ticket buying was so nice and easy. 4 more tickets for the first show, and it only took a minute of my precious morning time, then right back to bed. so here’s the schedule so far for this year

just announced, NKOTB at darien lake june 14 WOO!! haha

u2 9-16 and 9-17
metallica nov 4 – cuz i decided to go against what i told myself i’d never do, and give them my heard earned money. it’s freaking metallica, they should be on my concert list even if they are crap now on records
