Saul Williams in Toronto

“That’s just Sean Avery being Sean Avery,” Ottawa Senators forward Chris Neil said. “It’s kind of like an instigator. He may not be doing anything, but he is initiating.” http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/hockey/nhl/specials/playoffs/2008/04/14/avery.ruling/index.html and that comment coming from chris fucking neil….ha! i gotta say avery’s behavior in front of brodeur is pretty childish, i can’t stand him and i’m glad they made an unsportsmanlike penalty ruling if he does it again but…it is sorta funny haha.

tonight (monday)’s colbert report is the same bit on the political candidates that he ran by us at the UB speech.

tonight was saul williams in toronto with adr2 and tammy. thanks to george w bush and the terrorists, you now need passports or certified birth certificates to go into canada, when in the good old days you didn’t even need your drivers license…i mention this because, you would think having a passport would make crossing the border much easier. but no, that just means i get pulled over and get my car searched. at the booth the lady kept asking us about saul…what kind of music, how did we know him, how’d we know about the show…adr2 knew we were getting pulled over. so when we did, we had to go talk to immigration, which i’ve never had to do and i’ve been pulled over before (i believe this is the 5th time). he checked out our passports and all sorts of stuff in the computer for ages, before going back to the other agents to search my car. the guy searching starts asking us about saul again, we say he’s a rapper, hiphop, spoken word artists. then the guy goes, “is he the messiah?”….what?! what do you say to that? so i said, “some people might think so.” LOL. then he goes into how canada has strict narcotic laws…omg who is he trying to kid, everyone knows pot is almost legal in canada! he insisted he didn’t care if we did drugs as long as there were none in the car. adr2 was offended hahah.

all in all we were at the border for about 45 minutes but still made really good time and got to mod club not long before doors opened. i was starving so we stopped into the grocery store across the street where a lady thought adr2 and i were actresses. tammy arrived after doors opened and we hung out up at the stage.

saul had an opener but she never said what they/she was called. she introduced the band members twice but not herself. she didn’t play long but she had a great voice and the music was interesting…dj, and bongos and another percussion thing, and guitar.

between acts i was saying something to adr2 about being asexual, and this kid who was by us suddenly is like…did you say you were asexual, because so am i! hahah one of my own kind. we ended up talking to him and his cousin the rest of the time and they were hilarious. definitely some of the best crowd people we’ve encountered in a while.

saul came on around quarter to 10. i wish i could tell you what songs he played but i don’t know many of the titles so it’ll be tough. they began with “break” before he came onto stage, but i can’t remember what song they actually performed after that. it was quite excellent. they did almost all the new album and about 5 from his first. he actually had a “band”, cx kidtronic, a guitarist and a keyboardist. they closed with “sunday bloody sunday” which i forget that saul covered, and it was amusing because the guitarist did the “Edge stomp” ๐Ÿ™‚ the whole show i kept thinking, it’d be neat if he busted out with “gunshots by computer” since technically it’s his song too but i didn’t think he would. they came back out for a short encore, and he ended up really closing with “gunshots..”…and it was clear from the crowd reaction that everyone there was nin fans haha. anyway. great show. saul was very energetic, all over the place, in the crowd. they had some technical difficulties with the sound on stage, and their tech’s suck, but they over came it and put on a good performance.

Bye Spiral :(

trent is shutting down the spiral fan club and incorporating alot of what was offered with membership in nin.com for free. that’s all fine and good…sorta. he said there will still be presales, but for anyone who signs up at nin.com. which could mean 10837 scalpers buying up all the tickets. not good. plus it seems there will no longer be early entry and a separate line. which sucks BIG TIME. i adored the early entry privilege. presales and early entry are the sole reason i was a spiral member. god knows i had no use for the message board, and i could care less if i got a “free gift” every year.

cassie suggested the reason for eliminating the spiral could have been that it was at least partially paid for by interscope and now trent “can’t afford it”…which is possible. clearly the web component is what costs money (but the arguably, moving those features to a free nin.com means he’s still paying for it), and i’d gladly continue to pay a yearly membership fee for a “fan club” without the web component, as long as it offered the presales – to members ONLY. i’d even give up the early entry, for restricted presales. i know i would never have gotten to see 38 shows without the spiral presales, as i’d never have gotten tickets to shows that all went on sale the same day – and with the fall 05 leg, almost all the shows we went to went on sale at the same time.

i know other bands – smaller bands – like stone sour have internet presales for their free “fan clubs”, i’ve taken advantage of them…but they clearly don’t have as much draw for scalpers as a band of nin’s size. and the stone sour presales were run by the same company as the spiral, music today, which makes me wonder if they’ll continue to do the nin presales on nin.com…and i’m sure music today doesn’t do this for free…

this has the makings for a u2.com ticket sale debacle. only now trent doesn’t have the resources (ie interscope) to back him up and fix it like u2 did. we shall see. hope it all goes well cuz i have 7 more shows to buy ๐Ÿ™‚

*edit* as found on the spiral, someone asked Rob
I don’t know all the details of the presale process yet – they are
still working on that – but the goal remains the same as always: To
keep the good tickets available to fans, and out of the hands of
brokers. The process will be very similar to how it was on The
Spiral, where tickets have your name printed on them, and matching ID
will be required when you pick up your tickets and enter the venue.
I’m sure a lot more info will be coming soon, but we’re doing
everything in our power to keep the best seats in the hands of the fans.

books

to my tech savy friends…do you need your own server to run a torrent tracker? anyone got one I can have ๐Ÿ™‚ or want to go into partnership with me? ย none of it is making sense to me at all but it’s something i really want to do.

i’m sick. i fell asleep watching the ottawa/pittsburgh game (Go pens!) and missed the dreaming show yesterday. mike was supposed to come over tonight, and canceled, good thing. oddly i want to eat everything, craving weird things, but can’t taste them when i eat. like jalapeรฑo poppers…haha.

my recent adventures in reading has been the Chronicals of Narnia. I was enjoying them until the last book. You can see the Christian parallels and illusions throughout the entire series, but the last one takes the cake. And it bugs me. Why can’t you just have a pure fantasy series for children? Why add all these religious overtones to it? When the last book started I didn’t even want to read it…because yes Narnia is awesome and you don’t want to read about it ending…you don’t want the Ape and Donkey to make a false Aslan cuz of course the shit will hit the fan…but then it gets ok until the end. And I’m talking the very last page…Aslan telling them, well there was a rail accident and you’re all dead now!! wtf must it be so blunt?! blahblahblah he is god, narnia is heaven…. i just want a good story. maybe i should read harry potter. but for now i’m going to read donnie brasco ๐Ÿ™‚

that is until the nyquil makes me pass out…and it’s coming on quickly.

music

ashes divide – billy howerdel’s new project – released their cd today called “keep telling myself it’s alright”. since billy was the creative force behind a perfect circle, this sounds very much like APC. just with billy singing, not maynard. i’ve gotten through it once, and i enjoyed it. i even bought it!! i vowed not to buy another cd without listening to it online first, after just assuming maynard’s puscifer would actually be good and having it be horrible. it also helped that ashes divide was only $8 at target. if all cds were $8 i’d probably buy alot more of them.

i’ve also had the dreaming’s cd “etched in blood” sitting on the desk for what…a month now? more? and i haven’t listened to it yet. going to see them tonight tho!! haha. maybe i should dig up the pics of me and johnny haro (drummer) back in the econoline days and give them to him hah.

and alien ant farm is releasing a greatest hits cd…um…is that really necessary? didn’t they have like 3 songs? hahaha

i was out and about today trying out a new photo technique, and i found myself driving around love canal (oh sorry…they call it Black Creek now, because that’s a much better name to use for an area filled with toxic waste), and lasalle, down to the falls. turns out some punk(s) have been shooting cars with pellet guns around lasalle for the last week and have moved on to shooting moving cars on the lasalle expressway…which is where i was and how i go to work. of course i didn’t know this at the time, mom called after dinner freaked out that i was going to get shot at on my way to work hahah. obviously…i’m here, and i did not get shot at. i’d much rather have not been told about it tho because now when i drove by the 2 pedestrian overpasses, i got paranoid that i WAS going to get shot at. it was much better not knowing that i might have been shot at the entire last week. let’s hope it gets resolved during my 2 days off.

monday is saul williams in toronto, i keep forgetting.

Stephen Colbert!!

Went to see Stephen Colbert tonight with Jerry and his wife (who i finally met after knowing Jerry for 4 years ha). It was fantastic. I think he was more himself, than the Colbert Report character most of the time, and he was very funny. He poked a few jokes at UB about their sucky football team (and later in Q&A someone pointed out that this year they share the mac east somethingorother championship and he had to apologize ha), and about Buffalo weather – the usual. He did a bit on Eliot Spitzer and how Spitzer was on his show 10 minutes before calling his prostitute that got him in trouble. He closed out with “the word” before a q&a that was amusing as well. He was on stage an hour and a half, and it was well worth the ticket price.

It’s common knowledge among BCT people that 10 years ago UB recast the concourse buffalo using the original molds to create a campus mascot, and the mascot sits outside the Arts building. Well…they don’t have 1 buffalo, they have 2…and it was on stage behind Colbert (and he tried to grab it’s balls, only it didn’t have any haha). The 2nd one appears to be somewhat mobile, which leads to the possibilty of new molds being cast from it, since the original molds have since been lost (again). Or, I think they should just donate it to us ๐Ÿ™‚ I want a buffalo damnit.

nin news: Band Members: Trent Reznor, Alessandro Cortini, Josh Freese, Robin Finck, Rich Fownes

dream

dream: the city decided to open the aud for one day so people could see it one last time. so i went with a bunch of people, including eric, adr1, phill, , david, my mom and kristen ondesko from high school who was really sunburned. sometimes there was no roof on the aud, and it was more like the ice bowl, other times it was normal but it had lights on so you could actually see what it looked like. we were wandering around, finding new places like the organ, and gift shops, and a chapel…where there were people lighting candles. so i lit a candle for the aud. more and more people kept coming and filling in the seats and it was really emotional and people were crying cuz they were so happy to see the aud full again. then all of a sudden there was a hockey game. we were like, awesome!! they cleaned the rink surface enough to play roller hockey. phill and i went down to rink side and realized…holy crap they made ice. we couldn’t believe after all those years the ice equipment still worked. i guess then the next day the city decided to open the aud back again, but now my mom and i were there still, we had never left, and we see people outside the doors waiting to get in. then they were getting mad cuz we were already inside and they weren’t being let in. my mom wanted to go to this one shop that was called the western door and apparently used to sell western gear at hockey games..yeah i dunno. i kept telling her that the aud was closed, so that there wouldn’t actually be anything in the store. but we went by it and i was like SEE, nothing…only there was stuff inside…model car kits and golf balls ha. then there was something about being outside and painting starfishes to sell that i kept getting out of the back of an ambulance…wtf. oh and there was a bit about trying to get to the terminal with mary, but we kept ending up near our lady of victory, and the pope was there standing outside waving at people, much like mascots will do outside stores advertising sales ha

some people at work drove out to Connecticut today to apply for jobs at the Hard Rock casino in Florida…7 hour drive for a 3 minute “interview” and they got rejected. glad i didn’t go.

stay

it took me a long time to fully appreciate this song. i’d very much like to see it back in the setlist

Green light, Seven Eleven
You stop in for a pack of cigarettes
You don’t smoke, don’t even want to
Hey now, check your change
Dressed up like a car crash
Your wheels are turning but you’re upside down
You say when he hits you, you don’t mind
Because when he hurts you, you feel alive
Hey babe, is that what it is

Red lights, gray morning
You stumble out of a hole in the ground
A vampire or a victim
It depend’s on who’s around
You used to stay in to watch the adverts
You could lip sync to the talk shows

And if you look, you look through me
And when you talk, you talk at me
And when I touch you, you don’t feel a thing

If I could stay…
Then the night would give you up
Stay… and the day would keep its trust
Stay… and the night would be enough

Faraway, so close
Up with the static and the radio
With satellite television
You can go anywhere
Miami, New Orleans
London, Belfast and Berlin

And if you listen I can’t call
And if you jump, you just might fall
And if you shout, I’ll only hear you

If I could stay…
Then the night would give you up
Stay… then the day would keep its trust
Stay… with the demons you drowned
Stay… with the spirit I found
Stay… and the night would be enough

Three o’clock in the morning
It’s quiet and there’s no one around
Just the bang and the clatter
As an angel runs to ground

Just the bang
And the clatter
As an angel
Hits the ground

now i wait to see what the ninhotline’s april fools prank will be this year…

hockey

final sabres home game of the season tonight. WIN. overtime…overall it was pretty boring and a bit depressing. we should be preparing for the playoffs and not for the golf course…wins are good though. and for the first time our section won free bigmacs (woo…:P). i took a bunch of pics during warm up for phill. most blurry, don’t realize how fast they move until you’re right next to them. there were a few that turned out nicely though. the dippin dots cart moved next to our section now, talk about convenient. hopefully they leave it there next season haha.

dream

some weird dreams…that alot of my friends at work were in vegas and kept txting me stuff…and that oddly made me feel loved, that they were out on vacation and thinking of me. the rest of the people at work – when they went on break they ended up in my parents living room with me. and tammy was txting me that she was buying 7 tickets tomorrow, and i had no idea what she was talking about. but apparently the nin shows were going on sale and regardless of how many people were going to be going she was getting 7 tickets. i was like um…just wait, i can get spiral tix etc…then she was on break and ended up in the living room, and i was on the laptop getting a strange IM from someone who claimed to be thomas vink’s girlfriend…and i had no idea who she was talking about but tammy figured out she meant thomas vanek. i thought, if you’re his girlfriend you should know how to spell his fucking name right. then my uncle ed was there telling me about this really great gambling site, as if i gamble at all let alone over the internet. and then i was in some strange simpsons episode that doesn’t exist, where homer trashed some sort of barracks looking place and me and the rest of these people (who had also been in the living room) had to go about scrubbing it all clean while he just sat there and watched.

anyone know professionals with experience in restoration? searching for new board members…

also i decided we need a burlesque show in the area. i think that’d be a whole lot of fun.
