music stuffs

i’m watching duran duran live at wembly arena 2004 on vh1 classic and am thoroughly enjoying it. it’s only an hour long sadly, so it’s really just the big hits and seemingly 2 “new” songs (aka ones i didn’t know). simon le bon sounds really good, way better than some other live things i’ve heard of theirs. wish i could have seen them at the casino on that tour.

in other music news…

lacuna coil released a new album, “shallow life”…produced by a guy who also worked with linkin park and avril lavigne…so i wasn’t really expecting much, and good thing. it is so completely mainsteam modern rock radio friendly. it is completely devoid of the “goth” creepiness factor that made them interesting when i discovered them 6 years ago (that long already!). “shallow life” lost most of the nu-metal, fieldy-on-bass sound of “karmacode” but it is just so so soooooo modern rock. it’s good for what it is, but it’s disappointing for what i want from lacuna coil. i’ve only listened once, will give it more time, but it’s nothing like “unleashed memories” and “comalies”…

i tried to buy julien-k’s album but have not been able to find it at hot topic (where they begged you to buy it in their newsletter…) downloaded it and i actually like it more than i thought i would. i had downloaded the ep last year and didn’t really care for it much. again, i need to listen more, but first impression is that it’s decent and listenable. the “kick the bass” video, which last time i checked was still on youtube, is basically porn. weird.

and i might have already mentioned it…new depeche mode “sounds of the universe”. it’s sorta chill and mellow. there are a few upbeat songs like “wrong” (which still sounds like marilyn manson and not u2 :P) but alot of slower things. i don’t know if i’ll end up listening to it much, instead i’ll stick with the singles discs and ultra. we shall see. i still want to see them in toronto tho.

books…

i finished the first 5 ender books, and need to get the newest one. until then i borrowed The Stand from adr2 and bliss, and um…this other one by poppy z brite but i can’t remember the name. and i’m still reading atlas shrugged. i just keep taking time off to read other things haha.

and my laptop is back in service after the power cord finally bit the dust – after being bitten by kitty. and just in time, i didn’t know what i was going to do with myself while watching my shows tonight hahaha.

Best songs of the 90s

vh1’s list of the best songs of the 90s. discuss.

i bolded the ones i agreed with, tho not necessarily in the position they appear in. i striked the ones that should never have made the list lol. there were some surprises (24,40 lol, 56, 60, 65, 84 lol) honestly, #2 surprised me…i mean *i* recognize the amazingness of that song, i’m just surprised it came in at 2.

one song that didn’t make the list, but should have….candlebox “Far Away”….for sure. also “enjoy the silence” should be on there. of course i keep thinking of more…aerosmith…pretty much any song they put out in the 90s. they were huge. verve pipe “freshman” (but i’m obsessing over the song atm). republica “ready to go”

britney

aside from recently watching marathons of americas next top model on mtv, i havent watched mtv in years. i don’t really know the point at which i outgrew the channel, but there is absolutely nothing on it that interests me anymore. i have not watched the VMA awards in years either, since i stopped liking anyone relevant in the pop music world. but i had to find a vid online of britney spears opening performance. mainly because i read perezhilton.com and he left an oh so nice message to her on his site hahahaha. i had to see it.

wow did it suck. never a britney fan, i am not afraid to give praise where praise is due. like christina aguilera. she’s fantastic. don’t like her music for the most part but she’s fucking talented. britney. she’s had some good moments i guess, but this was not one of them. we all know she, like most pop stars who dance (ahem jackson family) lip sync. ok no big deal. but she could have at least learned the words to her song to make it slightly convincing. she also didn’t dance. just walked around, and sometimes shook boobs and pelvic thrusted. she got helped around stage by backup dancers. all in all it reminded me of michael jackson at his (recent) worst. she even learned that, hold the mic to your mouth to cover up how bad you’re lip syncing thing, that MJ was always so good at. i could give a shit if she’s popular ever again, but i would hope that SHE gave a shit about it. but from the looks of the “performance”, she doesn’t. oh well. so sad. maybe all the little girls out there who want to be teen pop stars will learn a lesson – don’t marry a loser backup dancer and pop out 2 kids in the prime years of your career. pull a madonna and don’t start having kids til you’re 40.

amusing from an article on the VMAs: “MTV brought the show to Las Vegas for the first time, hoping to reverse a sharp slide in viewership for its awards bash.” maybe more people would watch if the show didn’t completely suck, and the music industry was pumping out artists that were at all good. or if mtv would let trent show a photo of george bush on stage during “the hand that feeds”. hahaha

i’m so hoping i can sleep. pleeaaase let me get a good nights sleep. i have stuff to do tomorrow and i’d like to go find some docs that are suitable for work down on elmwood.

u2

still in my u2 mood…

the amazing thing about the boston 05 bootleg is not the band, and it’s certainly not bono or the setlist. it’s the incredible amount of crowd participation. u2 crowds are usually up on every single song – you don’t get alot of casual fans at the shows because the tickets are so hard to get. but the boston bootleg in particular is RIDICULOUS. you can hear the crowd singing, loudly, on almost every song. it’s pretty surreal. i can’t imagine what it’s like for the band.

i also had forgotten how rude/funny bono was in the buffalo 01 bootleg. during “in a little while” a guy had crowd surfed up to bono on the tip of the heart. bono said “you’re a little overweight…for flying. you weren’t designed to fly, friend.” hahaha.

and “where the streets have no name” is one of the most incredible live song experiences ever. there is really nothing that compares to how “streets” builds, and the band comes in, and it’s just…as close as i’ll ever get to a religious experience. the lighting the band used for it during the elevation tour was the most perfect too. the spinny light things. honestly, i can’t remember what the lighting was like on vertigo tour, so it must not as been as good haha.

since the boston 05 bootleg had 25 songs i’m adding 4 more to my setlist (i’ve excluded all songs that bono’s voice can’t handle anymore, like “the unforgettable fire” and “lemon” etc, tho lemon, especially as macphisto, would be so fantastic)
1. last night on earth
2. do you feel loved
3. stay
4. so cruel 🙂

on top of this kate sent me an article about daniel lanois, where he says that him and brian eno are working on u2’s new record, and the whole thing feels like the achtung baby era again. exciting tho i’ll believe it when i hear it. they also said that how to dismantle an atomic bomb was a guitar record and look how that turned out LOL!

i also dreamed that boyx came exploring with me somewhere. and about jehovah witnesses going door to door and having doors slammed in their face at each house. and that i was in london, or rather, had recently been and forgotten to go to camden market.

ideal setlist

my hand looks like i punched someone. boyX has been the only one to notice, and so he’s started telling people i punched someone hahah. if only that was true, instead of my blood vessel randomly burst for no reason.

so since i heard a song at work a few days ago that reminded me of “Running to Stand Still” i’ve been in a big u2 mood. that has included going through bootlegs to find a good live version of above song, and actually listening to the boston 05 bootleg for the first time. i was reminded of how shit ass the order of that setlist was. there are still moments that make me smile, and moments i wish bono would shut up, and songs i wish weren’t in the setlist. and i was reminded about songs i didn’t like and still don’t (ie miracle drug). i also listened to pop giants, the last popmart show, which is great great great.

so that led to me thinking of my ideal u2 setlist…
1. mofo
2. until the end of the world
3. beautiful day
4. city of blinding light
5. the unforgettable fire
6. out of control
7. love and peace or else
8. hold me thrill me kiss me kill me
9. gone
10. with or without you w/shine like stars
11. acrobat
12. please
13. love is blindness
14. mysterious ways
15. sunday bloody sunday
encore
16. bullet the blue sky
17. running to stand still
18. dirty day
19. discotheque
20. where the streets have no name
21. walk on

i limited it to a fair 21 song set heheh. they’re getting old you know 🙂 and for the fun of it, songs i never ever want to see ever/ever again
1. yahweh
2. the playboy mansion
3. miracle drug
4. grace
5. the wanderer
6. peace on earth
7. miss sarajevo (sorry haha)
8. miami

dbags

another reason on the list why i’ll never pay for metallica anything ever again….

http://www.dailygaming.net/index.php?name=News&file=article&sid=230

“Attorneys for the gaming companies named in the lawsuit were bemused by the lawsuit. “Our company paid a licensing fee to feature the track ‘One’ by Metallica in Guitar Hero III,” counsel for Activision/Red Octane told reporters. “We don’t understand why Metallica would turn around and sue us, unless they’ve gone from insane completely batshit insane since 2001, but we’re confident that the law and our contracts will be enough to have this thrown out.”

and

“Some speculate that the various arms of the band’s crumbling media empire are so out of touch that they don’t know what they have and haven’t licensed, while others believe this may be one last desperate grab for attention from a band that has lost all cultural significance outside of reruns of “I Love the 90s” on VH1.

and

“The band infamously blamed file-sharing programs, which were quickly rising in popularity at the exact same time that Metallica was quickly disappearing from the mainstream consciousness, for the decline in their records, believing that it was Napster, not their own douchebaggery, that stopped fans from buying their albums.

found at last!

FINALLY! I found my favourite music video ever on youtube. omg it’s so fabulous. must find my post about it in the archives…

march 2, 2003

i have found the be all and end all, best video ever made. by Greg Hihn called “Jeopardy”. Yes this is the song Weird Al parodied as “I lost on Jeopardy”. Funny thing is, that sounds like what he is saying in the real song to begin with. This is the video: bride gets out of a limo and runs into a church as if she’s late for her wedding. groom (greg) is standing around nervous. they start the ceremony and greg gets more nervous. he looks behind him to see a couple chained together with handcuffs. he looks behind again, and their hands have melted into one hand. he looks behind him again and…something…coming from their hips are attached together…couldn’t figure out what they were. just big growths of skin i guess. then the priest wants him to put the ring on the bride’s finger, so he does, and lifts the veil. there is his pretty bride who SUDDENLY turns into a screaming skeleton. the church flashes green, and greg runs down the aisle. but wait!! the church is posessed, and a big worm like creature – much like the sand worms in Beetlejuice – bursts out of the floor and wraps itself around greg and pulls him back to the altar. he tries to hold on to a pew, but the pew was poorly constructed and a piece of wood rips off in his hand as he is being dragged by the worm creature. the worm pulls him back to the altar, and he starts stabbing the worm creature with the piece of pew wood. the worm creature starts to spew slime on the groom. then suddenly the worm creature is gone, and greg plays air guitar for all the wedding guests on the pew wood. then it shows greg and his bride leaving the church, having rice thrown at them, and getting into the limo…which is really a HERSE!…from there the camera pans back to show a projector showing this adventure on the wall to…the bride and groom as skeletons!!!!!! oh and the end was something about greg stealing the bottle of champagne and running away into his car, just as another bride is running out of the church. so he goes and picks her up and they drive away. and his license plate says “lips” on it.

grammy ramblings

i’m trying very very hard to watch the grammys. but it is TOUGH. 34 minutes, and the only thing of interest was madonna’s opening, and even that wasn’t that spectacular. coldplay (at least i think it was coldplay) reminds me why i hate the newest u2 records. and did they steal one of edge’s guitars? whoever the black guy was singing “everyday people”…maybe you could think of more words for your next song. ok, alright, i get it, you’re gonna take it slow. move on now. he might have stolen the record for number of pitches in one held note from mariah carey and x-tina. i thought it was going to give me an aneurysm.

and i’m not even looking forward to u2. i really don’t want to see politician bono on his soapbox. bowie is to get a lifetime acheivement award. i think it’s his first grammy ever. i’m not sure he’ll be on the show though…

will edit as the show continues…

oh hey and u2 is on right now. bono doesn’t look too bad haha. they should just come out and do banjo “vertigo” really surprise everyone. and GAH my mom…calls in the middle of “one” just like she called when u2 was on the grammy’s 4th year in college. and wow mary j blige’s voice just does not fit well with bono’s. but it was pretty good. ha they cut them off before bono could say anything.

yay bowie! i’m real glad that these lifetime acheivement awards are getting about 5 seconds of mention.

wow kanye can sort of read. and haha at the pittsburg guy getting booed.

and edge is now my fav member of u2. he just is. and hole ee crap i hate paul mccartney. but helter skelter is alright. would have been better if he invited bono to do it hehe. such a great guitar riff that song…

oh hey, another 5 second acheivement award.

mariah was actually pretty good. it wasn’t the total slutwhore crap she was doing when she went crazy and threw crockery (that one’s for carolyn lol).

so sly and the family stone get a whole song and dance segment for their lifetime acheivement award. i want a bowie tribute. how fun would that be?!? and fantasia from american idol…is she supposed to be the next tina turner? sly had a killer mohawk.

i’ve been distracted since in exploring the library of congress. god i’d love to work there…

so what award did u2 just win? song of the year? sometimes you can’t make it on your own. maybe if no one in bono’s life dies in the next 4 years, u2 will have a better album next time around.

kanye’s little prerecorded blurb about starting the 5 second delay now was pretty funny. the performance sucked.

ok this is beyond boring now….

music1: got the new depeche mode cd. it’s good. i think i like it better on first listen than exciter. they are one of those bands where i dont like a full album. i really would like to see them. but i looked at my bank account and it’s sooo not happy. maybe i can win tickets somehow haha.

music2: word on the street is the tea party broke up. dave told me on the bus to work yesterday. he said he saw it on their site, but i went today and only saw that their tour dates were cancelled for personal reasons. dave said jeff martin wants to go off on his own and do his solo stuff but didn’t rule out doing something with tea party years down the road. i guess it’s good that i saw them 983497 times.

music3: haha Burt Bacharach will get his first feedback from American audiences when he performs tunes from his new politically themed album with the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra in Buffalo, N.Y., on Friday and Saturday.

music4: from i love the 80s 3d, hal sparks, “my friend used to call no jacket required, no talent required.” LOL

totally froze to death at the terminal today for 2.5 hours. i still haven’t warmed up and i even had soup. really tired too, almost fell asleep in the building haha.

and i think i realized why i wanted to be a psychologist. i was absolutely in love with Growing Pains, and Mr Seaver was a psychiatrist. i used to name my barbie dolls after the Seavers.
