show review by melissa
the minute we walked into the avalon, and i saw how small the place was, i knew we were in for a great show. i could not believe how enclosed it was, and how well i'd be able to hear the music. in worcester, when i saw them in may [with nin], their sound was nowhere near what it is now... maynard's vocals weren't as loud as they should have been (in worcester). sunna was pretty good, though the crowd wasn't as responsive as they could have been. i think i was the only person there who knew any of their songs. they didn't play "i miss", which i was disappointed with, but they did a fairly good job show casing their talent, despite them not having the best sound. the minute i saw moshing, i knew i didn't have the testicular matter enough to try to get up front, so i settled myself on the right hand side, on a set of stairs. i was probably 50 feet from the stage. the music for the set change was really good... mixed with the cure, radiohead, jeremy enigk (!), and some others that i don't remember now. the lights went down, crowd goes nuts. spotlight on: 2 beautiful women, sitting at a small table with one candle lit. they proceed to play strip poker, down to their bras and panties. they get up, kiss, and blow out the candle. i talked to someone later who said the short-haired brunette woman was maynard's fiancee. it was quite something. lights go down again, i hear a baby talking.. then the first notes of magdalena. the curtain was still up, and it came down halfway through the song... maynard had on blue pants and no shirt, which exposed his entire kundalini, and he had a blonde wig! very pretty. they went into orestes, which just brought me to tears (during the "i don't want to feel this overwhelming hostility" part) his voice was flawless, every note was on key... and they have improved their sound so much... nothing like worcester. sleeping beauty... breña (another tear-inducing song), rose... they seemed so into their playing, and so together... they played so well, and the sound... i just cannot get over how much better they sounded than when i saw them in may. it was like a totally different band. they belong in small venues. i'm not sure when [maynard] said this but i think it was near the beginning of the show: "this is the opening night of our us tour, and it's very special. what better place than boston?" "this song is not about anal sex"- thinking of you. his hand went into his pants, and he turned around towards josh and simulated masturbatory pleasure. it was quite something. then after the song he said "oops, then: "i used to boogie here back in the day." and told us about him living in boston.. into thomas... i don't know why this song hit me so hard last night, but for some reason, it made an impression that i've not previously experienced... during the 'reconnect to you' parts... good goddess... it was just breathtaking. after that, "i'm glad i had breakfast this morning. billy, did you have breakfast?" he mentioned some place, didn't catch the name, said "they have good coffee. this song has nothing to do with that." 3 libras... definitely a highlight, and one of my favorite songs... during the "you don't, you don't, you don't see me" part, i had chills and goosebumps, i cried, and i think at one point i made eye contact with him, but it was hard to tell with his wig. hollow came next, and it being the first song i had ever heard from apc, i'm very partial to that song. it was amazing, and other people in the crowd were singing, unlike worcester. this is not verbatim, he was talking too fast for my pen, but he said "i have this weird dilemma. i was into black sabbath, and ozzy, but i also liked the cure, and people who like ozzy, don't like the cure. so this is my attempt to remedy my childhood traumas". ozzy/cure song. it was really cool to see it live, finally. they did a great job, and the end verse, maynard sang "whenever i'm alone with you, you make me feel like a man again". "thank you for your support. we'll be back soon", he turned around, i hear billy playing guitar, and singing... no words, just maynard singing.. finally, i recognize it as "over" and it was incredible. it's like a totally new song. i had a wish that they'd play a new song, so i guess hearing a different version of "over" was as close as "new" that i was going to hear. i remember the ending got really intense and had a nice buildup. he also said something about people living in black and grey areas, and how we should all be more kind and accepting of each other. "this song is called judith". i really really don't understand moshing, but this song seemed to be the most "mosh-friendly". at the end, his mic apparently died, and he threw it down. apparently, the club needs bands to be done by 10, so they can have their stupid dance club shindigs, so they cut his mic out. how rude. (Delirious editor's note: Maynard turned his mic off so he could throw it, I saw him do it.) they threw out some water bottles, and maynard gave the "peace and prosperity" vulcan sign as he walked off the stage. we went out, and i waited by the busses. i've never done that before, but i had some ricollas i wanted to give maynard, so i was wishfully thinking i could see him. i was standing there, talking to the roadies loading their truck, and troy walked out... i said "hi troy. that was a great show. you guys sounded incredible. thank you". he looked at me, smiled, and said "thank you". he looked at my shirt, and smiled. or maybe he was looking at my tits. either way, he was nice. then the coolest of the roadies told us maynard's bus was the other one, so me and these 4 really nice guys i met walked over to it... waited, and waited and waited... it dwindled down to me and one other guy, and we realized maynard was already on the bus... but we still stood there talking, and paz walked out, right up to us... we were standing by the bus door... i said "hi paz. great show! thank you so much" and she gave me a really warm smile and said "thank you" and walked into the bus. she's gorgeous, and tiny... and seems nice. the bus pulled out a few minutes later, and we went home. it was such a great show, the best i've ever heard them... and i hope they come back to boston (or maine!) again. this band is a live band... i cannot stress that enough. their passion comes through on vinyl, but live is where you can really feel it... and where they sound their best. i bought another sticker pack, and they had these really nice silver pendants with the symbol on it, so i had to get one of those. oh, and i saw some woman video taping the show from the soundboard [area]... so i'm hoping we'll get to see a live video sometime soon. overall, a perfect show.
